The issues of media cp were resolved decades ago.
The scene has since progressed somewhat (and is becoming obscene).
Technology has improved and digital media seems to have altered the balance against distributors and copyrite holders.
It is true also that copyrites and their revenue streams have become valuable 'commodities'. Their value increased by extension of the period during which royalty is due. Several huge collections exist.
Concerned parties, legal teams, bean counters and powerful financial lobbying have brought about wholesale change.
Something is going very wrong. The changes are unfair and unbalanced.
Criminalising Jonny go litely & pals at blah blah college is utterly wrong,
those unable to recognise such are in the wrong job.
This is obsessed micro management gone insane.
Mass copying of content is a different ballgame and can fall only to the remit of government and international law.
The detail isn't complex nor trivial - but it has already been resolved fairly by compromise. The answer thirty years ago was levys and that remains good today.
If a product can copy digital media raise a levy on it.
Every blank writeable cd and dvd already provide this.
On the matter of Pirates.
Stop using that term to describe content thieves.
Go invent a term for a modern day problem.
The REAL Pirates of old - the first of them - were heros of their age.
Both in England and America.
Go check national and naval history.
Anyone for tea, Dah-Ling.

On now to your subtle but brick like point.
Raising a sum or levy on items at pos wont cost the consumer an arm or leg.
A tiny percentage on each hifi and home media system and pc will generate significant sums.
Add in the potential of some 6 billion mobile handsets upgraded each year and the ipod clone market. Yes 6 billion, (eventually everybody on the planet will have at least one handset playing mp3's)
l wonder if a few people are walking around with there heads stuck in a dark place.
The effort and resource to enforce the current situation is desperately needed elsewhere.
Every body involved in instigating this farce should be ashamed.
The individuals at the top of the tree, govt, industry, the courts are there to bring wisdom to situations such as this.
It is a shambles and, well... tell me l'm wrong.
Go on someone explain to me the value and justice of the current situation.
Please.
