Slow shutdown and restart
My computer is taking several minutes to restart and shutdown. It takes forever for it to go from XP to the logout screen and then finally reboot/shutdown. Startup only takes a few seconds.
I have Norton antivirus 2005, and I think it may be the problem but I can't find anything in the options to change that makes a difference. I don't have a floppy disk and I unchecked the option for Norton to check it. For some reason device manager lists a floppy drive, but there isn't one.
Athlon 64 4000+
MSI K8N Platinum
1GB PC3200 DDR
160 GB SATA II HD
Geforce 6800 GT
Audigy 4
Windows XP SP2

there's a good chance that it is norton. did you disable the floppy controller in the bios?

Well, that got rid of the floppy drive showing up in device manager, but shutdown/restart isn't any faster. Thanks for the suggestion.

well,I think norton makes shut/restrt slow.one thing is to disable the autoprotect option in it.Moreover I think it will be good to use a bootfile defragmenter.I had an effect with that

I'll bet you have the "Clear Pagefile at Shutdown" option enabled in a tweaking program.
P.S. leave "Autoprotect" alone.

I tried that option when XP was new! My computer would sit for 1\2 hour sometimes before shutting off.

Thanks for the responses. I just checked the clear pagefile on shutdown in the registry and it was already turned off.

I just lost my shirt on that bet! :(
Then it could well be Norton!
Isn't there an option to "scan files on close"?
