windows boot probs
I am trying to fix a buddies computer without reinstalling windows, because he cannot find his windows xp disk. The system boots normally until it shows the desktop and the background is all that shows, explorer does not seem to launch as no icons or the taskbar shows up. when i try to open the task manager a dos prompt looking windows shows up for a half second and goes away. Any ways to fix this problem? I am at a loss. Safe mode does the same thing by the way and booting with the last known good configuration does not work either.

I'm afraid that you'll need a CD if you can't access the menus for System Restore.

You may be able to repair:

The CD you use must have the same service pack *or better*.

You could try System Restore from a command prompt

BTW, what kind of pc is it ? If its an HP , you might be in luck.
