    The tech said what!?

I have a friend who took her computer to a 'tech' who told her she had a 'bad bios' and a 'power supply that was too powerful for her computer... she needed a 250W and there was a 350W psu in it.'

The computer will boot to safe mode in Win98 but won't boot normally.

I haven't looked into it yet but this just sounds ludicrous.

She knows what flashing is... she's not a complete newbie. I'm starting to wonder if this 'tech' is goofy or is just trying to cheat her. What do you think?

It sounds like he's telling half truths trying to make a quick buck. Take it somewhere else and let them have a look at it.

get a second opinion and have that guy fix it.

most problems will be solved by reinstalling the OS. it doesn't cost the customer anything if you just reformat and reload (except for time). replacing parts is the last resort.

OMG!!! that is the lames excuse to get customer to buy new parts from you

at least give them a more convincing answer, and make up something not so lame to get them to upgrade, like underpowered or something ... geezus..

overpowered.... who the hell is going to believe that?

and bad BIOS? LMAO the machine wont even post without it

These are the responses I wanted her to see. I gave her the addy here.... sysopt.com/forum to check the threads to find this one.

She was at work and was giving me this info a bit at a time.... first the 'bad bios' thing. So I'm thinking.... hmmmm.... flash gone bad or I suppose it's possible a chip gone bad. Hadn't heard of that last one but I suppose it's possible. Then the 'over powered' nonsense. I asked her if the bios had been flashed.... 'no'.

She doesn't have anything on her C: drive that's not backed up to her D: drive. I'll pull the C: drive and slave it to my system and check it with Ontrack Disk Manager, then just reformat, etc.

I don't know about the rest of you guys but I don't go for this. If I find out there's nothing wrong with her puter other than a corrupted os via virii or whatever, I'm reporting this guy to the Better Business Bureau and telling this girl not to give this guy a dime.

There are too many peeps in this world doing this.... we need to step on them one creep at a time. No 'tech' can be this stupid.

Stupid nothing, try $ hungry. Does this tech work for a well known technology chain with the "best" deals? Sounds like some of the stories ive heard from people that have had thier rigs "fixed" by them, and thier "squad".

Take it somewhere else and warn all your friends about this idiot or whoever he works for.

Being a tech I know how easy it would be to make a few extra bucks by lying about stuff to the stupid computer users who haven't got a clue.
I might be a bit insane and what not, but I still have my principles and honesty and cound never do that!

Thats the same in any other business like your mechanic can get over on you cuz you can't tell what part is bad or where, same like your specialist tells you need these meds that are super expensive but your insurance will cover it and he gets a paid vacation for pushing that drug at the end of the year, need I say more.

That tech should be beaten with a wiffleball bat!

There is a scum bucket who owns a shop right down the road from ours. A few weeks ago he charged a guy with a Dell Laptop $339 for a one CD data backup & virus removal.

Customer comes to our shop stating that not all the docs he requested were on the disc & that his system is still slow & locking up.

I ran a basic 20min hardware test with pc doctor & system passed with flying colors. I then installed AVG, rebooted & scanned in safe mode & it lit up immediately. 8 viruses infecting over 100 files.........I took screen shots & saved them for him.........backed up the data, then formatted & reinstalled........Normal service would have been $180, we charged him $90 & now have a customer for life who will tell others we are GREAT!

You treat the customer right, give a fair price & they will be repeat customers who will spread the word. Some IDIOTS just dont understand! Going for the one
time kill is bad business not to mention unethical.

Sounds to me like the guy was hoping to sell a 250 watt psu and score a "junk" 350 watt psu.

uke: that is along the lines of what I was going to say. He probably either needs, or bets to have a greater chance of using a 350 than the 250 he probably has on hand that he can dump in her system.

    ROFL!!! ROFL ROFL ROFL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

PSU too powerful?!?!?!!? LOL! That doesn't even make sense... Wouldn't he go for "not powerful enough" so they'd spend even MORE on a bigger on rather than a downgrade? LOLOLOLOL! The 350w is most likely perfect, but there's no such thing as a PSU that's too powerful as PSU's only use the power they need to use, therefore better to have too much than too little.

My first inclination is to reformat and reinstall your OS like the other guys already said.
