    PCMIA slot not acknowleging cards

I picked up a laptop from a friend The laptop is a Compaq presareo. It refuses to see anything that is put into the port. when the cards are inserted, there is no indication of any sort.

Windows reports that the interface is operating correctly and all the drivers are loaded.

The laptop is not old but it is like a 900Mhz with XP home

    any ideas?

Also I have tryed 3 cards that I know work in my machine so the cards are not at fault.the cards are USR modem,Dlink wireless card and an ethernet card.

    Thanks in advance!

You can try cleaning the port with a q-tip and some alcohol first. If that doesn't work Try a new pencil erasure. Clean the contacts on the card too.

Don't. The connector inside the PC has 2x 68 fine pins. You'll bend them, and then it'll be actually broken.

    Bad idea. Really.

What do you do when they have been sitting around so long with nothing in them that they get corroded? I forgot that many people don't have the same skills I have. They are cleanable, but you do have to be gentle and only clean in the right direction, in and out.

That's best fixed by (1) a proper blowout with canned air, and then (2) ten or so plugging cycles of an actual card.

Sounds reasonable enough. I learned how to repair mechanical watches years ago, so delicate parts don't intimidate me.

Do they still work in that slot? You are not being very clear here as to what works and what doesn't.

It sounds like a bad slot. He is going to have to switch everything over to USb.

or for some reason, there might be an IRQ conflict. try looking at sys info and see if there is any conflict.
