I've lost the Right click context menus...restore possible?
Too bad, on a clean install of XP Pro I have this trouble...a day ago my Start menu cascading list of all the programs no longer responds to right clicking the mouse. I can't make desktop icons this way any more.
Can anyone advise me? I'd like to restore this handy function.
Thanks,
hans

Have you tried another mouse yet? They are all for the most part cheap junk made in China now. I'm suprised some of them can even last a week.

YEs, the trouble exists only when trying to create a shortcut from the program list. No context menu.
It works fine, and gives a menu except for this task....

In that case it's a registry error. Check here for instructions to change the right click menu.....http://www.jfitz.com/tips/rclick_custom.html

Thanks. It looks promising, but I must admit, a bit above me right now.

That kind of problem is hard to fix without a lot of research. Have you tried a system restore?

I haven't the heart, really. So many things done since the last point.
At least the defect isn't serious.
Ah well...

It's at home, on XP PRo. I've got AVG with daily updates, and paid for Zone Alarm.

Well then you'll just have to duke it out. If you get the registery fixed, make a restore point. You might check it out anyway, other programs may have made a restore point that is recent. You are talking about the "Send to..." feature I assume.

Yes, "Send To"
This is one of those little things that bug me. At least it's running ok otherwise.
I appreciate the advice

Hve you tried it from the folder the program is installed in? I have noticed some programs you can create a shortcut to desktop and some only make a duplicate you have to drag on to the desk top.

I Tried to get a Notepad shortcut. Any program exe.'s that are in a folder work fine; it seems that the program menu alone is affected.

It still sounds like a registry error. The easiest solution is a restore. In XP that was made easier, but you still have to set the restore points as a matter of habit.
