    AMD 761 & sapphire 9600 pro dilema

Ok, I'm having problems with my Gigabyte GA-7DX+ (BIOS F7)
and my sapphire 9600 pro. First of all, here's my system:

    AthlonXP 1800
    Hercules FortissimoIII 7.1 soundcard
    Sapphire 9600pro
    3x256 (768) PC2100 CL2.5
    Gigabyte GA-7DX+ BIOS revision F7
    CompUSA 300w PSU
    WindowsXP SP2
    Directx 9.0c

Everything is @ stock clocks & voltages. Temperatures are fine (checked all of them). I've tried Catalyst 4.7, 4.8, & 4.9b to no avail. I've tried the built-in Microsoft AGP drivers for my AMD761 chipset and I also tried the latest (5.33) AGP drivers from http://www.amd.com. AMD says that windowsXP has all the drivers already for my motherboard. AGP is set to 4x with fastwrites enabled (I've tried it with disabled too) and still getting problems. I've re-installed XP twice. The problem, you may ask?

I seem to be able to run Direct3d apps ok but OpenGL apps do not work! At all! I tried installing the AGP driver first and then Catalyst, and vice versa. Another problem I'm having is random crashes (computer's still on but screen turns off). My 9600pro works great in both my friends' computers (VIA KM266 & KM400) but doesn't seem to work with mine. When I run dxdiag, under the display tab everything is enabled EXCEPT AGP texture acceleration (I'm assuming this is the meat of the problem). From all hints it seems like it's a chipset driver issue but I've tried 2 different chip. driver versions with no luck. Doom3 won't run and crashes with this error:

"1541 MHz AMD CPU with MMX & 3DNow! & SSE

I also tried Humus's OpenGL demos and they don't work either, but his D3d ones work great. So do the two dxdiag display tests.

I hope this post is detailed enough.
    TIA! (thanks in advance)

it's either Windows XP SP2 messing up. YET ANOTHER PROGRAM,

or you just need to reinstall your DirectX Drivers, try removing it and reinstalling COMPLETLY.

    Hmmm...

Everything seems to work alright with my old Geforce2 MX.

Better hardware compatibility - another reason to switch to Nvidia. Too bad ATI still performs well with better IQ. Sigh.

It now says AGP Texture Acceleration is enabled, go figure. Let me plug my 9600p back in and see if it works now for some odd reason.

ATi drivers check AGP transfer integrity, and turn it off if it isn't going well. There's a separate tab in the control panel that lets you check on this.

Yes, the SmartGart tab. It says AGP 4x with fastwrites enabled. Disabled doesn't make a difference in this situation.

Maybe I should just lay down the cash and get an Athlon64 and MSI K8 platinum. I've thought about it but I'll be stuck with my PC2100 RAM until I can afford some more. What do you guys think? Upgrade or try to fix?

    BTW thanks for input.

Now you got AGP enabled on the hardware level ... that means you can't blame the mainboard, the card, or any of the hardware drivers. It seems your DirectX installation is screwed up.

Upgrade? If you got the money ... Athlon-64 will run your PC2100 RAM btw.
