Yeah I play my games, but I usually have stuff running in the background. I like to do alot of photo editing and I've messed around with audio editing and EVEN VIDEOEDITING even though its so slow. I love to make 3d rendered scenes and short clips. I program in VB.

The usual stuff: Word processing, spreadsheets, web surfing, CD burning, etc.
None of that is what I need the power for. The only thing I do that needs it is my games, especially the online roleplaying games. EverQuest, Star Wars Galaxies, City of Heroes are all really intensive on the RAM and GPU. Less so on the CPU, but that helps too, and so does a broadband connection.

We aren't all power freaks, I used to use a via cyrix processor-first comp. I built. I now have a 1 gig pIII w/386mb of ram. Not a real screamer but good enough. I'd like to upgrade because I hate to wait. Not a patient person. I'd also like to upgrade because I enjoy building & tinkering with computers. That's what hobbies are all about. Life doesn't always have to be practical does it? Some of the most enjoyable things most definitely are not practical. Sex for one.

Porn DVDs for two! But really it isn't about power, because between the last four systems (I would sell my old PCs to my friends and family and just build another one with the money I got...heh) I couldn't help but build I've seen little difference in performance. I just like to know that now I am at a 3200 instead of 2800 and now its tweaked the way I like it. Plus the better your PC is now, the longer you can use it til its old and crappy.

That is one thing I failed to mention. I use my machine or the wifes ( both hi end rigs ) to edit digital photos in photoshop. We both use a 6 megapixel cam and need alot of power to edit those huge images in a reasonable amount of time.

Which reminds me this 1.8 celeron intenet machine is only at 2.3 and I'm kinda bored...

There must be a answer out there!!! I wont believe that with the latest, most advanced systems out there are being utilized to do the same things i can do on my cell phone. This is freakin me out! (as you can see, I have issues)
I tend to agree with you to an extent. But in my expereince, people who doubt the need for high end computers tend to be unawre of a high end computer's potential. Well, that or they flat out can't afford a new system. It generally boils down to one of those two. Which one is it in your case?

I use the speed for video encoding. I record home video and record them to my pc, encode them and burn them to DVD for reglaur viewing.
I play a lot fo games. I think Warcraft III and MAx Payne 2 are my most intense games at the moment. I intend to get Doom 3 and HL2 when they are available.
I do all the regular stuff as well.

I mainly do developing (and too much Java got me thinking on a faster CPU ), college projects, web browsing, occasional design jobs, e-mail and little gaming (only games I really love). All this on an Athlon 1GHz w/ 256MB and a Matrox G400

I have 4 computers.
1: For gaming, internet, simple 2d graphics, misic, DVD, Watching TV, burning CD/DVD an anything else.
2: 2D, 3D graphics an Video editing, plus burning.
3: A test computer. for testing update, new software, tweaking an new hardware B4 I use them on my other 2 computers.
4: This one was given to me 'cause it didn't work. Monitor was screwed up, it was just locked , After booting into safe mode, unistalling every app, cleaning the registry, uninstalling all hardware ( having the drivers ready ) Rebooted, install the drivers, it works perfectly . No idea what I'm gonna do with it.

It's just fun to take apart and add stuff to it. Faster is better.

What do you run on your computers that requires so much speed?
Notepad
I also have 4 computers.
My "Neodemon" is reponsible for my winning $1000 and having the retailer sell it with my name on it.
My "El Cheapo" was basicly just something to do after my life ended.
My "Celery POS" was an olde eMachines with a bad power supply my friend gave me. $25 later + a Voodoo 3 gives me a Quake III machine @ 30 fps.
My latest "Kyro2K62" was another olde machine my bro-in-law gave me when I sold my "old" 2200+ system to them. I removed the SiS 315 video and dropped in my old Hercules Prophet 4500, giving me yet another machine that can handle Quake III @ 30fps.
So now that I think about it I really only build machines for 'something to do', as I really don't play QIII anymore. I sometimes get an inkling to try out a different OS (probably what the old carp machines will do).
Oh yeah, and I still do level design for The Nameless Mod. I think we may release in about 3 months.
