How do you utilize your Computer?

After reading and reading posts about people building blazing fast computers with like 100000000000 mb of ram, i began to wonder, what do these people run on their computers that requires them to build these incredibly fast computers. I'm know certain games these days require fast computers for them to run properly, but is all this speed necessary? Please dont get me wrong, i'm not saying that people shouldnt build fast computers. I too feel that building a fast *** computers is very exciting and the anticipation of that first benchmark run almost wants me to bust a nut. However, i'm just curious what you guys run on your systems. Call me outdated, but I play games like unreal 2004 and counterstrike on my amd 2500 with like 512mb of ram and everything works better than perfect. What do you run on your computers that requires so much speed?

I mainly do internet and a few apps, nothing to extreme. For me a browser window popping up 10 seconds faster is a charge..Games occasionally. I like my all-in-wonder card even though I seldom use it.

Its just as much a fact that I build and sell these things semi-profesionally, would be bad for business to have a client see me on an old pII clunker.

At the same time, the old PII clunker with the right o/s, apps and tweaking would still be pretty skippy.. I still have several I use daily.

I think im at heart a high tech packrat. I stay about 6 months behind as im not loaded with $ but I buy the leftovers cheaper from those who are, or think they are.

Lesse, I'm here, I'm on the web, I do email with my family. I also play games, obtain music to listen to, rip my own cd's to mp3's to listen too as well. I do medical research ( for myself, got a few problems ) and keep my check book balanced correctly. That covers most of it I think. I moved up because my 7 year old machine was a dinosaur.

Oh, I also crunch Seti units on this one and the 2 old dinosaurs

So far, it doesnt seem that anyone really fully utilizes their systems. Things such as email, chatting, and internet all can be done with a like 100 dollar computer and yet people tend to spend hundreds and some even thousands of dollars on the latest equiptment, but for what? There must be a answer out there!!! I wont believe that with the latest, most advanced systems out there are being utilized to do the same things i can do on my cell phone. This is freakin me out! (as you can see, I have issues)

I agree with you about most people not fully utilizing the full potential of their setup but then again you must realize that it is their choice and we must respect that whether we agree or not. It is called "Freedom of Choice"!

We also must realize the fact that some users buy more than what they need because they want to be ready to run any future software that might require additional memory to run optimally.

But for myself, I feel that having more memory and not needing it is good as compared to not having enough memory and needing it. Just my 2 cents into the mix!

Seems ironic that I dreamed of todays capabilities with hardware and software for art/graphics/3D rendering etc., but it's grown cold.
Same goes for music composition, but here the frustration was losing months of work, along with the Korg M1 synth needing a fix. Which BYW was as simple as replacing a pop in battery last week, only to find that everything stored on the ram cards blanked with dead batteries too. The music I am getting geared up for again. The art work is on hold
So, basicly now it's getting info. & charting financial markets for my will-be-wife, info in general, finding sites like sysopt with interest and humor...sometimes chat
And got gamed out, but getting ready to check back in...when I can find some dedicated time.
    A little of everything actually

I Play games mostly, search the net, some word excel etc, I use 3dmax for mods, some times when its Quite I like to sit and look at my computer and see what a wonderful job I did building it satisfaction in building a super fast machine is better than any app you can use on it. Most people in here IMO including my self just love what they do. I don’t think its to have the fastest comp nor do I think its for apps, love doing what we do is the best part of it I owning your custom rig , think anyway.

I am most guilty of playing games too much ...but that is what i enjoy most....

Other applications and the readyness to apply those with ease and no worries ...,plus the ability to play all the latest games..on into the near and distant future..is why I bought a high end system....

You are correct that anything from 1.6GHz up to a 2500 AMD ...would be suficient for most any normal computer operations....

I like speed and the more you have of higher ram..more of and bigger CPU's the better everything works quickly and efficiently...it just makes sense....

If you do anything with graphics and editing..then more is better..yes...as is the case for the latest games out there.

For simple to medium business apps. a mid range computer is enough.....

Do not feel quilty or even confused as alot of these geeks just want the best and fastest out there to brag about...and I am sure alot of them do not use all of what they have for anything more than games or the like...

My system is real nice and high end by normal standards...but becoming outdated with each and every passing tech. advancement that comes out and it just goes on and on.....but....

I LIKE IT! whatever makes you happy

I do lot's of photo editing and 3d rendering that needs the speed. For most people though the computer is like a car. It's a peer group status thing. Why would anyone buy a car like a Porsche that's cramped and too low to see past all the SUVs on the road, just to commute to work every day in a traffic jam? Why would anyone build a high speed computer and then put a window and lights on it? The monitor is the part you look at. The fact is most people with a modern fast computer use it to cruise the internet and save pictures and music on it 'till it crashes and they loose them all. Then they do it all over again. I recently bought a two year old loaded $2500.00 laptop that was originally purchased by a retired man who died so I know he didn't clean it out and it had only a couple of unfinished letters and on it and Mavis Bacon teaches typing. Apparently all he ever used it for was to play solitary. The only thing I use it for is a backup computer and an internet radio player in my wood shop.
