I'm running about the same (2500 @ 2.3) and I'm not really thinking about an upgrade for the CPU. Possibly the graphics card, but not until I have real info on hand on more than one engine by far. The rest of the system isn't getting an upgrade for about a year for sure. That's about the only thing which will show a tangible improvement for me is the card - albeit at a cost

I will start looking back into intel when they have some 64bit chips to offer. Right now graphics cards are starting to hit limits with the current 32bt cpus we are using.

Not everythihng is targeted at people that have to spend thier own money!! For example a research institute that runs on a budget, that if it dosent spend its cash, It dosent see any of the savings, so why not spend that extra 30% on a cpu. That 10% cpu means for example, a calculation taking 8 hours, can be done in a working day with that saving, as opposed to a overnight proposition, Translate this into real world savings, The time saved by a highly paid professional that isnt sitting around waiting for results, far outweights a few hundred dollars for a cpu. Hell i would love a cpu that is certified to run at 3.6ghz raw clock for the calculation I do........... but then again im not a highly paid individual, im just a lowly research student

although MHz isnt everything intel are clocking some pretty impressive clock speeds i would say.

intel with the prescott have the potential to get clock speeds of 4-5Ghz, why they dont go down a different route to improve performance nobody knows, but i can assure you that a 5 Ghz CPU would give a better 3dmark score than a 3.6 Ghz so i would say it is wrong to say 32 bit is hitting a limit with all the fancy new cards.

lucky that you arent the entire market for cpu's bill. FYI hyperthreading on a athlon64 wont do much to improve the performance, so holding out for it seems silly to me.
