AVG update problem

I am having a problem accessing the AVG update. When I try to update it gives me a problem stating that there is no automatic connection to the Internet. I have connected through dialup, and also have tried opening the Internet browser before trying to update. I have ran stinger on this computer and it found 13 files infected by the Sasser.worm.b virus. I tried going into msconfig and using diagnostic startup and enabling the services needed to connect to the internet and it still wouldn't work. There is obviously some kind of virus still attacking this computer. Any ideas on how I can get AVG to update? Or how I can work around this problem? Thank you.

I just got AVG to download the update. I turned on ZoneAlarm, and tried connecting one last time and it worked. Thank you so much for your recommendations. I'll be sure to use them in the future.
