    silver dime????

i went to go get milk today at a store, and when i pulled out a dime, i found that it was rather shiny, in a different sheen, and somewhat just...different.

the dime is from 1964. and it doesnt have any tarnish or anything. doesnt look like any other dimes at all.

is it possible that the us treasury used silver in some years for dimes????

I dunno much about them either.

I was rolling out some spare change and found a 1945 copper penny as well as one from 1958, and 1937.

I know they had quarter's with no copper in them, not sure about dimes but most likely they did.

if it is pure silver, drop a bunch of other dimes on a hard surface. If that one sounds fairly different then it probably isnt made from the same metals and might be worth investigating.

Any dimes. quarters, half dollars, and dollar coins minted 1964 and prior are struck in 90% silver.

Information corrected as pointed out by admin. Oops, sorry assistant admin.

Fine Silver is 99.9% silver or better. This grade of silver is used to make bullion bars for international commodities trading. Fine Silver is too soft for general use.

Mexican Silver is usually 95% Silver and 5% Copper. Mexico is the only country currently using silver in its circulating coinage, but these coins are not minted from 95% "Mexican Silver".

Sterling Silver is at least 92.5% silver and up to 7.5% other metals, usually copper. Sterling silver is used for flatware, jewelery and plate, and is of a relatively high purity and sufficient hardness to form durable objects for daily use.

Coin Silver is 90% silver and 10% copper as dictated by United States FTC guidelines. The Coin Silver standard was established in the US in the 1820s and used in silver coinage of the US as well as other countries.
