    Offensive pop-ups

I have had some young children using the computer for homework and games recently and yesterday I was mortified to be told there were some pictures of" rude ladies" on the screen.
There were, not much worse than page 3 of "The Sun" but enough to upset me that they should have got there.
I sat down and reviewed the security and privacy settings, all of which were set to medium or high.
I have Adaware and Lavasoft pop-up-stopper and have now configured then to start with windows.
Any suggestions for you, my Sysopt friends in need, will be wselcomed.
Are there better apps. than those I'm using and are they what I really want. I'm happy to buy them. In other words, suggestions as to how I can protect these children when their parents trust me to keep them safe?
It's not a pleasant feeling I can tell you!!!

    Try This: http://www.spychecker.com/program/hijackthis.html

HijackThis is a tool, that lists all installed browser add- on, buttons, startup items and allows you to inspect, and optionally remove selected items. The program can create a backup of your original settings and also ignore selected items. Additional features include a simple list of all startup items, default start page, online updates and more. Intended for advanced users.

IE has the "Content Advisor" tab in the properties that can be configured to help filter most bad surfing habits, mistakes or possibly hijacks . There are good commercial programs that go further, such as Cybersitter and Net Nanny .

As for popups , spyware , adware and hijacks , you need layered protection . Adaware is not enough. These links should give you some idea whats needed.

Why am I not surprised at your comprehensive replies?
Thanks to you both. I shall now set about following the links provided and get some armour plating round for my little ladies. If they had been older I might have worried less but one is 9, the other is 10 and both lead very sheltered lives, rightly so in my view, youth and innocence is over far too soon these days.

First stop the pop-ups with the Google Toolbar:

    http://toolbar.google.com/

Next, clean up the PC with Ad Aware and Spybot.

Lastly, install Spywareblaster and protect yourself:

Cleaning up alone can't prevent new spyware. Only Spywareblaster can do that.

What about Net Nanny, I've had a look at it and it seems cheap but it says it can't be used with any other filter. Are the progs you mention classed as filters? Also, with the other stuff, will I actually need Net Nanny?
I know I'm naive but at 75 my kids don't need protecting and nor do I.

    2 mins later.
Just checked Google, I have pop-ups blocked already but clearly it needs more work.

Some spyware (like Hotbar) will generate pop-ups even when no browser is open.

You really need to do an aggressive total cleanup as suggested because Net Nanny cannot overcome spyware. Run CWShredder first:
