Lucky puppy saved from toilet drain
A lucky puppy escaped with his life when he was flushed down the toilet by a Northolt youngster trying to give him a bath. The staffordshire bull terrier-spaniel cross was trapped in a waste pipe underground for four and a half hours while his frantic owner tried to rescue the tiny week-old pup. Allison Blair, of Ruislip Road, Northolt, said: "My four-year-old twins Nicky and Daniel had taken the puppy outside and he had got dirty. Daniel decided to give him a bath but the only water they could find was in the toilet. He flushed the toilet to get rid of the mud and the dog went down with it."

"Daniel told me what he'd done and I ran outside and lifted up the manhole cover and could hear him crying but he was further along the waste pipe than I could reach." The 40-year-old called her family to help but despite efforts to push him along with a hose pipe they were unable to get him to the neighbours' manhole. She called the fire brigade who did all they could but did not have the right equipment. In a last bid she phoned drain clearance company Dyno-Rod.

Ms Blair, a mother-of-seven, said: "A neighbour flushed a toilet and moved him further down. We couldn't hear him and I thought we'd lost him but he started crying again. I called Dyno-Rod and an engineer with a special camera raced to us. He used it to find him and then gently push him to a fireman who was in the drain at the front of my neighbour's property. There wasn't a scratch on him. He had hypothermia but the next day was given a clean bill of health. It could have been a disaster but it was a fantastically happy ending. I just want to thank everyone involved, everyone tried so hard to rescue him, it's restored my faith in human nature". Rescuer William Craig, 22, of Harrow, added: "I was shocked when I got the call, I thought it was a wind-up at first. "I didn't want to hurt him with the camera, I called the RSPCA and they said to do it as it was his only chance. "It was a strange day." Little Daniel, who has learning difficulties, was devastated when he realised what he had done and is delighted to have the puppy back - the family has decided to call him Dyno.

Last I heard manhole lids are over 100lbs. And at least a manhole hook is required to remove the lid. Unless she had one laying around, how did she remove the manhole lid?

As for the twin boys, I see swirlys in their future.

Well now, Allison is Supermum, manhole covers......... cake walk. This would be a domestic or house hold jobbie rather than road storm drain access. The twins are looking remarkably well after some very big scares and worry soon after birth. There may just be something to your future gazing........... Allison's Mum gave the service at my owns funeral and words really cannot do Mary justice. A gifted family and one very lucky puppy.

Big prybar, some weight and a good effort of force, I would imagine, would be enough to lift one.

I'm amazed that puppy didn't suffocate in the sewer, let alone drown getting flushed down the toilet. I have a good feeling that dog is going to take a few bites out of his owners once he's big enough.
