MS' iPod Killer
Microsoft Corp., the world's largest software maker, will begin selling portable music players for as much as 80 percent less than Apple Computer Inc.'s iPod.
The Microsoft-branded devices will "look and feel" as good as the iPod for as little as $50, said Yusuf Mehdi, corporate vice president of MSN at Microsoft Corp., at the Goldman Sachs fifth annual Internet Conference in Las Vegas. The iPod sells for $249 to $499.
Microsoft, based in Redmond, Wash., will release a number of music players when it launches its online music service later this year, giving customers more choices than Apple, Mehdi said.

but it's the high price that makes ipod so exclusive!
just about everyone involved with computer hardware already sells cheaper mp3 players than Apple! MS is just after a piggy back from the ipod ...I hope it fails miserably!

Mod w/ an attitude
So Strawbs, if that is how you think, I have a Pentium 166 MHz PC for sale for $6000.
When would you like it delivered and how do you plan on paying for it?

I don't own an ipod because they are too expensive for my taste, but many ppl buy them because ...they are so expensive!
Having now established my position on ridiculously expensive hardware, do I need to tell you where to put your $6000 P1?
My point is - Microsoft is selling what everybody else is selling, but is trying to attach it's product to something with a gazillion times more kudos in the hope that some of that kudos will help multiply sales figures! What they are really selling is .wma & DRM.

I've only got 4999.95 saved up...Sterling.
Can we work a deal out??
We all can be critical of MS...but, it's easy to knock the guy on top down...
I like their products...but, I think they could do a little more research and R&D to give us a little better product, security and stability wise...
But, overall...I have no qualms...
they do have a knack for crushing the competition...though...(Netscape, anyone...)

I wouldn;t mind aying upt o 80 percent less for a similar prodcut...if DRM can be disabled or the settings can be modified than i'd be 100%fine. otherwise, i am still likely to buy this procdut if it is that much cheaper...

Ipods are so popular because they are the best Mp3 players made. (in the opinion of most) Microsoft is probably trying to create something that is of a quality close to the Ipods at a price that is far more accessible. I hope this comes off very well and then I can finally buy a decent friggin Mp3 player at a decent price.

For once I'm rooting for Microsoft. I hope this works out. Competition always brings the price down.

Do not be surprised if you find it only plays .wma files!
If DRM is installed - then there's not a chance of disabling it.

I wonder if it'll BSOD on ya ?

funny how MS is the underdog here.
I'm looking forward to it, because, honestly, if it comes even remotely close to the iPod for $50, it will be the best by far. Try and find a good mp3 player for less than $100, much less $50.

nowhere in Jakk's posted quote does it say it's an .mp3 player! MS has its own rival format to support.

Resaon why i doubt it'll be wma only is that if MS wants this prodcut to compete, they will make sure it is compatible with all others.

that is great news.. finally Ipod have a great competitor like MS. This might give a great punch on Apple so by next year we will see a war on mp3..
