Services Running On An XP System

If anyone knows what the minimum services that have to be running on an XP system are, will you please send me a list of them. I have an application called KillProcess but I have no idea what processes or services are safe to stop.

I wouldn't kill anything unless you know what you're doing, but there are a few sites to describe what the services do. It's not a "one size fits all" scenario. Different people need different services.

Thank you for the info. I have tried http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm and got myself into trouble that took about 1 1/2 hrs to fix.

I found a link here on the forum for tweaking XP and so far it is the best performance tweak I've found.

All that to save yourself 0.0005% more ram. I decided a long time ago its not worth the time to mess with killing services.

Is that really all I would be saving by running only the services needed to keep my computer running? !! I had no idea the benefit was so minimule.

I ask the question for a particular reason though. You see I am totally addicted to The Sims. I have heard of people using a program called KillProcess before they launch the game. It supposedley helps to keep the game from crashing.

There are some you can stop and disable altogether. Messenger, Remote Registry, and Distributed Link Transaction Co-ordinator for example.

like you have seen, it causes more trouble than good. unless your system is really really slow, you don't have to disable every single extra service.

Yes I know the trouble that it can get me in. At one time I noticed that I was running sluggish so I checked to see how many services were running. There were 35 processes running and I only had two applications open.

I'm doing great right now. Thank you everyone for all of your input.

You can run or disable services per user accounts, this can be done in services, when I do video editing I turn everything off not needed for best performance in 1 account, when I do normanl stuff I use another account with the services I need.

open a service > goto logon tab, hope rest is obvious.
