CA (Creative Acoustics) is pretty good. I had some 4.1's that I messed up. To turn them on you had to push a button on the sub, and since it was on the floor, I always used my foot
Right now I have some creative 4.1's that I got for my birthday, and they are pretty good.
I also heard that Logitec's 5.1's are pretty good and for about $60 at newegg unless they don't have them or jacked up the price.

Some of creative's low end ones are quite good. You'll never get the same quality as $150+ speakers though.

I have Creative Inspire 4.1 4400's - $55 at Wal-Mart last summer. Quite happy with them, very nice sound from my Santa Cruz.

I use the diagnostics disk from The Ultimate DVD test set to see just how good a lot of my customers speaker systems are.
With very few exceptions, they are pretty bad, the frequency sweep really shows those freuencies that the speakers have difficulties in producing. Usually towards the hige end, and almost always where the crosover between sub and sattelites occur.

For $60, you can't go wrong with the Logitech Z640's. Can't expect $400 level speakers though.

well i know bringing down my definitive tech speakers would be quite idiotic.
i thought the 2.1 creative acoustics was good. (i saw it at bjs) its not creative labs.
for $60 the 5.1 Z640 arent bad...i just wish i didnt break my HKs.

A good idea would be to head down to your local Worst Buy (or other retail store) and actually listen to em. Then you can decide which fits you best.

I hate to rain on the justification of a new computor parts purchase; but it is likely that you can fix the cord for a couple of dollars.
Enjoy!
