    100% CPU Spike Problem

    Hi all.
I read through the other people's problems with their computers running at 100% and was hoping that you could help me to resolve my problem since you did such a good job with theirs. I can barely access ANY program, even Spybot S&D, and disk clean up with my computer spiking to 100%.
In addition, I know I have a lot of processes running, I would appreciate it if you could let me know what is not necessary and/or how to shut them off.
Thanks for any assistance you can provide... ~Groovedaddy~

I downloaded HijackThis and here is the log:

You've got a couple of goodies in there.
    Altnet for one.
    P2P installer is another.

Can you update and run Spybot?
Also, download, update and scan with Ad Aware. Those two compliment eachother well.

It's hard for us to say which you need, based on your startup apps...but, I generally as a rule of thumb only have Antivirus, Firewall and Printer drivers loading as an app.

Run ad aware and spybot after updating them. Delete the **** they find.
I'd bet one or both will want to run next time you start the PC, since some of that is currently running, and can't be wiped.

See how far that gets you.

P2P software is a result of Kazaa, Morpheus or other file sharing.
They often get you into more trouble than what they're worth...I'd recommend uninstalling those...as well.

Here are some bad ones, found as spyware or ad ware:
These aren't all of 'em, but a few of 'em.
Delete these keys with Hijack this:

    C:\WINNT\pRmvr.exe

    C:\WINNT\System32\P2P Networking\P2P Networking.exe

    C:\Program Files\Save\Save.exe

    C:\program files\altnet\points manager\points manager.exe

    C:\Program Files\Common files\updmgr\updmgr.exe

    C:\PROGRA~1\Altnet\DOWNLO~1\asm.exe

Running P2P programs are just going to keep contributing to this...

    OK, did that...still not working...

Thanks for your help. I ran Ad aware and deleted the files from Hijack this like you said, and further removed Kazaa and all of it's components from my system. Unfortunately, my CPU still spikes to 100% when trying to run Spybot S&D and it only gets halfway then freezes. What shall I try next? Thx, Groove

Restart your computer so no programs are running (other than services) and run HijackThis again and post it here.

    OK...
Spybot, or any other program, normally can spike the CPU for a brief moment.

    Prolonged spike..however, is not good.

You may just have a virus and/or a bunch of stuff in there.

take D1's advice, but...you might have to roll up your sleeves, work with MSconfig to stop **** at startup, then use a combo of stuff as mentioned above!!

LOL OK.... {rolls up sleeves} I was going to do that Panda Scan, but I will do this first... One question though...When you take a print screen capture, where does it save it, and what is the process in which I can display it to you? I would like to show you all of the items on the start up menu, and find out what is what, if possible. I hope I am not being difficult, I am just inexperienced and I really appreciate all of the help. thx ~Groove~

In this instance, the HijackThis log is better. But after you hit Print Screen... Open MS Paint (or any graphic editing program) and click Edit and then paste. You image will appear.
Note: If you use Alt-Print Screen together, it will just take an image of your front-most window. Makes the file smaller. Also, save the pic as a .JPG.

    Good luck!

Please use caution if you MSConfig.

It is a great tool...but, it can also reek havoc on your PC.

Video Drivers, Mouse, keyboard drivers, etc., are also in here.
If you use MSConfig, only uncheck those you are positive you don't need, or are bad.

Good thing is...if you hose it, reboot in safe mode, and check them back.

Done that a time or twelve...

    C:\Program Files\SpyBlast\SpyBlast.exe

This is a phony spyware program:

    http://www.doxdesk.com/parasite/SpyBlast.html

    C:\Program Files\Inet Delivery\intdel.exe

    Pop-up maker:

    http://www.liutilities.com/products/...ibrary/intdel/

I'm going to tell you all of the **** you have now:

    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe
    C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe
    C:\Program Files\AIM\aim.exe
    C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Messenger\ymsgr_tray.exe
    C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe
    C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\msnmsgr.exe

Why FOUR messengers? Don't you ever clear unneeded startup items?

    You don't need these:

    C:\Program Files\Roxio\Easy CD Creator 5\DirectCD\DirectCD.exe
    C:\WINNT\GWMDMMSG.exe
    C:\WINNT\System32\CTHELPER.EXE

    O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {62999427-33FC-4baf-9C9C-BCE6BD127F08} - (no file)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TVTMD] C:\WINNT\TVTMD.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MemoryMeter] C:\Program Files\MemoryMeter\MemoryMeter.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Trickler] "c:\winnt\temp\adware\fsg_4104.exe"
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KAZAA] C:\Program Files\Kazaa\kazaa.exe /SYSTRAY
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DDCActiveMenu] "C:\Program Files\WildTangent\DDC\ActiveMenu\DDCActiveMenu.exe " -boot
    O4 - Startup: Event Reminder.lnk = C:\Program Files\Mindscape\PrintMaster\PMREMIND.EXE
    O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler.exe

You have tons of garbage there. You really ned to run both AdAware and Spybot - updated.

    Scan with Panda too.

Most of all, you need to stop saying yes to everything on the Internet and everything you install. There's no need to have all of those programs running at startup.
