XP 3000+ Upgrade will not run at defaults

I've posted this here although it's not an overclocking issue just want to get this proc running at it's defaults to start with. Have Abit NF7s ver1 board and upgraded from XP2100 which I have used for a while now. When I leave the default settings it will not boot stating that it cannot locate an XP system file NTOSKRL.exe or something similar. If I drop it back to a 12.5 multiplier then it boots OK. Does anybody have any ideas what this problem could be as it runs fine at the XP 2800 settings, I've run 3D tests etc but it should run at the default setting no problem surely.

What motherboard and memory do you have. Either could be a killer on it due to the 3000's default 400 FSB.

I was told that this proc was a 333 although there is also a 400 version of the XP3000. The board is the Abit NF7 s version1 and memory is PC2700

    Correct...
AMD did make a 400 and 333 FSB XP 3000.
Originally...the 3200 was the lone 400...but, it got handed down.

Might be a little late for this...but, it also might come down to this...since you were "told" this was the 333.
This tells me you didn't buy a retail new CPU..(nothing wrong with that...)

See what you come up with.

Right I've had it all apart and cut my hand to ribbons on the metal case. The proc is definately a 3000XP 333Mhz according to its code. I have an ASus GEForce 4 graphics card and memory made by Nanya 512 Mb. Still will not boot at default settings had to drop back to 166X12.5 Anybody any ideas what I can try next??

I've never heard of that RAM.
Not saying it isn't any good...but, not mainstream 'round here.

    Try downloading memtest86.
    Go here:

    www.memtest86.com

Download it, and make a bootable floppy.
Boot off it, and let it run for a good half hour or so....

If there are NO errors...next step.

    RMA that CPU.

There is no reason that the chip shouldn't run at stock speeds, at stock voltage.

Oh...by the way, what kind of PSU are you running, what brand/wattage?

I know its wrong to feel good about this, but I'm glad I'm not the only one having problems. I just bought AMD BARTON 3000+ for my ASUS A7V8X deluxe. according to the little sticker on the FRY'S bare CPU box, says; 2250mhz with 333fsb 512k. my bios is the final rev 1012, but PC PROBE says 2133mgz at 166fsb, this is the default or at auto on cpu in bios and is at 1.65v when cpu supports 1.7v , change it you say, I have and is not stable, bios wont even go passed 227 fsb any way. Went to AMD.com they actually have my mobo on there for this CPU for compattibility. I have ID my cpu with there software, Its the right one. this makes my *** twitch!!!! even under clocked its at 52c even with Aero cool deep inpact limited edition gold plating copper core heat sink my ram is 25c , aaaahhhhhhhh, anyways I'm just a phone system tech what do I know, please someone help. NEVER MIND I READ THE OTHERS, IT CAN ONLY HIT 200FSB. AMD LIES LIKE A PRESEDENT THEY SUCK!!!!
I SPENT THE MONEY FOR NEW P4 MOBO AND CPU ON RAPTORS

    I've got
    512mb of xms pc3200 400mhz ram
    Radeon 9800xt
2x36gig WD Raptor in Raid0 installed win2k in about 8 minutes

Freefade....try using punctuation...you know, like periods and stuff.
That is very difficult to read.
How can you be upset for buying a chip that advertises 333MHz...FSB.
that is exactly what you are running at.

In BIOS, the FSB is twice what it is set at.
    In other words...
    166 X 2 = 333 FSB.
    200 X 2 = 400 FSB.

It is NOT going to say 333 or 400 in BIOS.

Oh, and a 3000XP chip isn't designed to run 2250MHz....it's designed to run at
    2160 MHz.

Not sure where you're getting your info at. Check AMD.com next time.

By the way, I can see you're new here...welcome.

It's also considered rude to hijack another's thread.

Please start your own post for more help.

I swapped the memory for some crucuial, a spare 256K pc2700 chip I had and the same probs. System runs stable at the 12.5 multiplyer except when I try and run Call of Duty then I get blue screen and IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL error anybody know what this is???. Drop back to 12X multiplier and even this game works OK. Do we think this is a bad chip then? I would of thought they either work or they don't

My power supply is a 400W with a sticker on it saying CODEGEN I have just fired up the winbond utility that comes with the Abit board and it states my vcore is 1.62 although i set it at 1.65 in BIOS. I am currently running at XP2800 speeds Is this normal is the Bios setting just a ceiling level??? cheers in advance...
