black stuff around cpu die
What do you guys think this black stuff around my cpu die is ?? I was ganna test this cpu out tought but thought id ask first before I put it on the mobo ... in case it kills my mobo
I was using black thermal pads before so i know its not thermal compound , i cleaned the die so its not from the thermal pad ....
Edit : thats an AMD Athlon Xp 2400+ (t-bred)

Any chance of getting a sharper picture?
Hmm... I've seen thermal pads get pretty gooey and melt beyond the core sometimes. If it was black perhaps it just stained the top of the CPU. Otherwise, could it be dust? Can you wipe it off with a Q-Tip? Do you have any reason to believe the CPU is dead?

The dark colored stuff that looks like a drop of something on the 2 corners of the cpu die is the coating for the CPU die.
Nothing big to worry about.

it looks to me like some kind of black thermal compound was used?

yup the thermal pads were black but it looks like its melted on to the cpu itself ... and it looks like the cpu is dead too (i tested it agian) ... RMA'ed it to AMD
3rd motherboard and 2 power supplys later same results .... starts up for 5 secs ... amber monitor led with no monitor signal ... computer powers down ...
.. just my luck ... this cpu wasnt even overclocked

1. that "black stuff" is the coating of the cpu die to the packaging. helps to prevent damage to the die during hs installation.
2. starts up and shuts down sounds like your boards are detecting an overheated cpu and are shutting down to prevent damage to the cpu. most modern motherboards do this. are you sure the hs is installed correctly?
