I use charter cable & get only around 480k, but for "only" $24.95 a month it seems ok to me.

Just got cable this week - Optimum online.
Speeds were checked here - nyc.speakeasy.net
11PM Saterday night. Nothings tweaked..yet. I have a Motorola Cablemodem, and a Linksys Router.

    Test running..........
    ** Speed 4810(down)/901(up) kbps **
(At least 96 times faster than a 56k modem)
    Finish.
    $30/month
Northen NJ 15 minutes out of NYC

Most other tests from around the central US show about 3Mpbs down.

ADSL in rural Indiana, $40 per month. I average d/l speeds of 800-1000k with a peak of 1500k. I am thrilled with it as I used to have 56k dial-up. Cable is not an option here. I can download the complete netscape d/l of about 24mb in 4 minutes versus 3 hours on the dial-up.

Bellsouth ADSL here I get about 140-150 KBS down and about 25-35KBS up. Never varies any more then that and I get great ping in online gaming

    Rated speed of DSL/cable...

Should the average speed of DSL or cable include the waiting period to get it installed?!?!? If we do that, then I think the relative speed of DSL will JUST BITE compared to cable...what with my friends having waited several months some times to get DSL installed, while cable here in NYC seems to come in a week or less..

My boss, not a techie BUT an intellegent person, is having DSL removed from her house due to the consistent hassles and problems the telco can't seem to resolve - this in an affluent NYC suburb. God help the rest of the US with lower installed bases and poorer funded telcos...

DSL from Verizon here on the East Coast, 640 down, 128 up, but I vary from time to time (always faster, not slower). Sure, it ain't cable, but a whole lot better than dial-up, and I got in when it was the $39.95 deal for a year. Can't complain. Have satellite so cable is out for me (got mad with that whole Fox-on-Cox thing during last years NFL Playoffs)

Comcast@Home 2000-2500 Down/ and a sad 128 up....with very little variations. BTW all you Comcast users, I have heard that Comcast is going to pick up the ball that Excite dropped and keep the service going themselves.
Tell me what you need.....and I'll tell you how to live without it.

2Mbit down <-- Actually get it regulary
640Kbit up <-- only ever get about 400Kbit up

Still it's decent for 40$ cdn cable is only starting to be avaiable here now.. and it's supose to be 3Mbit down and 256Kbit up I think it was.. anyway.. I probally won't change till I see the cable working well somewhere.
