Cleaning copper heatsink

I have a Volcano 7 that I'm getting rid of, and i took it apart last night to clean everything, and I noticed that that copper heatsink looks like dust has been burned into it or something, the copper is all grayish looking. I can't get in between all the fins very well, so is there something I can soak the heatsink in to clean it and make it shiny again?

Hmm, I've got lots of cleaners in my house. Is there any particular chemical I should look for in the cleaners I have in my house?

Anything acid-based.

actually do you have brown sauce in the states? (fruity or spicy sauce, not bbq) cos that works as well, eats away the copper nicely so don't leave in overnight.

we used to shine up our old pennies(pre-decimal) that way to make them look brand new.

You might also want to try a Brass and Copper cleaner available commercially at the local hardware or even supermarket. They do a great job and are not going to damage the copper. I won't say they are 100% safe as they usually contain some toxic stuff, but used correctly, theya are safe enough

you are quite correct

put vinegar and water about 75/25 into pot put in item
bring to boil say about 5 minutes keep an eye on it
while the vingar and water boil
take out item
presto clean


good way to clean any pot or kettle if you have hard water
