    DirectX 9.

    Serial ATA.

    DVD burning for the masses.

400MHz FSB, and compliant hardware (CPUs, RAM, chipsets)

Can't think of what else there is that stands out, looking back over the past year....

so what is the standard? DVD burning sounds sweet.....is What the hell would someone need with 3GHz of a CPU....

I still have an AMD 450 and a 8.4gig hd, 12x cd-rw/dvd reader,128MB RAM, it was a really high end computer at one time built it myself.....

I could see using a a DVD burner, i have so much **** music i'm constantly switching cdrs in and out.....

So what processors are in? Is AMD still sweet or has the Pentium won?

You will notice a colassal leap in video card performance.

AMD and Intel still a tie.

I don't think there'll be a clear winner in AMD vs. Intel, at least not soon.

    I still run a K6-2 450

The standard? Not sure if you could define it ... I'd guess somewhere around 2GHz, give or take a couple hundred MHz (sometimes overclocked). RAM can be more solidly defined as OSes get more demanding - 256MB typical, 512 preferred. Something like that.

Oh yeah, CD burn speeds top 52x.

The Antec 1040SX that Alienware had back in the day (right around your CPU's day in the sun) was suddenly the coolest thing under the sun and everyone seemed to get one. Then suddenly everyone realized everyone had one. It did really start the case rev though. Some peoples cases now adays are crazy.

Cdroms stopped getting faster at around 72x. They started getting to a point where they spun to quickly and would make the disks explode. The 72x drives actually ran slower then that but used some fancy pants laser techniques. Now DVD drives are the thing. I think we'll start seeing games come out on them someday soon.

Intel is on the verge of moving to .09 micron fab.
    AMD is still posting losses.
Kazza Lite has been forcably discontinued.
    Doom 3 still isn't out.
    Half-Life 2 still isn't out.
    nVidia cards still suck.
Jon Johansen (the guy who worked out how to beat the copy protection on DVDs) has had the charges against him dropped.
BTX, the successor to the ATX case format has been announced and should soon start appearing on shelves.

    Thats pretty much it.

    JM is still insane!

kazaa's been discontinued???I was wondering about that.... how come it still works then???

In about five years i will catch up with all the expert techies who know more than I.....so much to learn .....trying to sit through allthe new info and tech revolutions ....while they all leave us behind in the dust....

with about ten thousand dollars i would have the best of everything out there ,and still not know half of what i was dealing with.....
