4x card on 2x slot
Hi,
My mobo has a 2x agp slot. Will a 4x agp card work on it?
thanks.

Depends on the card. If a Card is 4X-8X only it may not work on a 1x or 2x board. The voltage is too high. If the card requires AGP 2.0 spec or higher, it more than likely will not work.
yo trick, why you so **** doofus?

Almost right.
For one, the card needs to be "universal", will say, backward compatible to 2x/1x slots. Not all of them are anymore, e.g. Radeon 9600 series is not. This can be seen from the card and slot mechanical solution. There's a key tab in your 1x/2x slot; compatible cards have a matching key notch in their connector blade.
Secondly, you need to keep an eye on the power supply limit on your particular board's AGP slot. AGP 2.0 specification raised that limit substantially, so if your board goes by specification 1.0, you need to aim low on the card choice to get the system to run stable then.

don't mean to mess in your thread, but a friend is giving me a Geforce2 64Mb mx/mx 400 I want to put it in an old soyo board can't find any info on that board, but will a GeFoce 2 run on 2xagp?
-
Yes, again as long as the videocard is bacward compatible. I got a GeForce 2 (Riva TNT - 32MB), which is a 4X-2X-1X card running perfectly fine in an Intel BX-2 board with a 2X AGP slot.
Good Luck.

This might help some people with AGP card choices and backwards compatibility.

The information given there is quite inaccurate and confusing.
It's so simple. Yet again
Card connector blade:
Front notch: 3.3V signalling supported (1x/2x modes)
Rear notch: 1.5V signalling supported (4x/8x modes)
Both notches: Universal card, supporting both.
Mainboard slot:
Front tab: 1.5V signalling NOT supported
Rear tab: 3.3V signalling NOT supported
No tabs: Universal slot, supporting both.
("front" meaning toward the slot bracket end)
In consequence, a 3.3V-only card won't fit an 1.5V-only slot, and vice versa.
Although a bit outdated and not showing AGP 4x/8x-only gear, this page is accurate:
http://www.ati.com/support/faq/agpchart.html
As the table on this page shows, there have been card and mainboard design fvckups where wrong key notches/tabs were used. These are the ones to look out for. There have been quite a few TNT2 cards that were keyed "universal" although TNT2 is not, and there have been a few i845 boards with "universal" AGP connectors although i845 doesn't do 3.3V signalling.

Thank you all,
I based my purchase on the link provided by Peter M.
I bought the PowerColor ATi Radeon 9200SE (64mb). I was afraid to buy anything more expensive because none of the four 9200 models available with my provider explicitly say in the specs they support AGP 2x, at least not in the box; and the one I got, doesn't say anything on the (very small and simple) installation manual nor the CD. Well, the card works perfect on my mobo, a Shuttle Hot 591P with an AMD K6-2 @ 500mhz.
Thanks again!

You have done well Anything faster than a 9200SE wouldn't have been of use, since your CPU there wouldn't be able to drive enough 3D data into it to make a difference.
