What is a PS/2 Compatible Mouse Port?

I recently installed a Microsoft Track Ball optical mouse. Now, every time I start my computer, Windous wants to install a PS/2 Compatible Mouse Port. What is it and why do I need it? If I don't need it, how do I get rid of it?

I suspect it needs special drivers. Just because it is Microsoft, running on a Microsoft system...doesn't mean that it will do so without drivers. Most M/S mice will just...run. Work right out of the box..others need a bit extra. If you got a disk with it, why not do a setup.

Go into device manager and see how its being detected.

I have done the installation and the set up and the device manager shows the proper mouse installed. The PS/2 Compatible Mouse Port shows up as an Other Device with a confloct. The conflict is that the PORT uses the same resources as the mouse.

in your BIOS is your irq select on auto assign?

Each time I start the puker, I cancel out the install and go into device manager and remove it and everything purrs, so I guess I don't need it. I apparently need to remove it.

The next time windows boots up and asks for the driver, point it to the driver disk for your Optical Track Ball.

Is the Track Ball USB or PS/2?

If you want to remove devices so windows doesn't automatically reload them each time you start, delete them in SAFE mode.

The bios is set auto assign.
The mouse can be installed PS/2 or USB.
I removed it in Safe Mode and when I restarted it was back.

You should try Imperion1's suggestion. It wont hurt the system and you'll get rid of that annoying message. Or, if you're not using the PS2 port, disable it in the BIOS. I remember a USB mouse doing the same thing when I installed it on another system.

I installed the mouse at PS/2 rather than USB. Maybe I should install it USB and disable PS/2? What do you think?

I think that you should click Next instead of cancel and force Windows to search any old folder. If you click Next > Next > Finish, it won't bug you anymore.

Thsi is not a mouse problem. This is a Windows problem. I'm betting that you have Windows 2000...

I have disabled the "PS/2 Compatible Mouse Port" and that helps, but each time I start up windows asks for "msmouse.cat". I can't find it on W98 disc or the MS Intellipoint disc.
If I were to remove the "PS/2...port", how could I keep W98 from trying to install it each time I boot?
Where could I find msmouse.cat?
