win98 and win xp file sharing

I am having a networking problem with my Win98 and WinXP desktop. The problem is, the Win98 box cannot see any computers on the network (including it’s self). Yet, the WinXP box can connect to the Win98 machine with no difficulty. Both machines were communicating until I upgraded the 98 with the second edition patch.

The two computers are connected through a Linksys 4 port router and share a cable modem. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

    Sigh.

The default Workgroup for XP is MSHOME. The default Workgroup for Win98 is WORKGROUP. They need to be the same.

Now, you need to either log on to both machines with the same username and password or add the username and password you're using in Win98 to the user accounts on WinXP.

    I know, Bill. I know.

did you make sure to enable file and printer sharing on the win98 system also? use client for microsoft networks logon as your primary logon on the win98 computer.

I beg to differ on the same username on both computers. I ran a home network with XP Home and Win 98 and only one computer has users set up. I know have Xp Home and Xp Pro on the network again with only one computer having any users at all. All I had to do was enable NETBIOS over TCP and put both computers on the same workgroup.

Win98 doesn't really care who connects. XP Home can be set up that way too, but Pro demands that the user be known.

I'm not s'ing you, it installs as workgroup . Only probable difference is that I'm using an OEM CD.

yea i had the same problem. xp saw win98, but 98 was like "i want to sleep"

so just set the workgroup as the same and have netbui installed? (my xp didnt have netbui...made all the difference in networking)

I have a similar problem which I have never solved (I am a dufus when it comes to networking). The two Win98SE boxes see each other fine and share files just fine. But they cannot communicate with the Win2KPro and Win2KAdvanced boxes. (All are running through a switch.) Any of you network folks have an answer for this?

    Thanks,
    Hedda Lora
