The 905Bs are solid cards more for network management than for normal home users. where did you get the card from? there's a guy in the networking forum looking for good network cards. check it out.

I just picked up a like-new 3C905B-TX off eBay for $1.29 plus shipping. 
I guess I got lucky and nobody noticed it on the auction block.

Been using Linsys LNE 10/100TX's. generally Best buy runs a sale on them once every couple of months for $14.95 plus a $10 mail in rebate. So I'll grab half a dozen or so and mail out the rebates under different names and addresses. Sometimes I get the rebates and sometimes I don't. But $14.95 is still a good price considering they list for $24.94 in most stores. And when I do a service and one is needed I just charge retail plus labor. Hey I gotta eat ya know.
Oh but yes you don't need to spend $80 on a NIC to get a good one.

Whatever you do, avoid D-Link NICs. The darned RJ-45 ports actually wear out (fast!) and won't hold a connector in place worth a darn.

When I sent my older son to college I paid $100 extra for a 3Com 10/100 card. Other upgrades $100 (64 MB to 128 MB); $150 upgrade for an 8 MB Diamond Fire GL 1000; $150 upgrade from 15" to 17" monitor; $50 upgrade from 4.3 GB to 6.4 GB HD. The machine was smokin'!

Disks - what are they - I remember the endless hours of rewind , play , adjust volume , adjust tone , rewind play , crc error , rewind play - yes indeedy the old BBC Micro - Pure class!!!
Oh and dont forget 8" disks - sad to say but I have a vax mini system in my garage and it still runs those - One of the most secure systems ever!!!

Funny, I had a D-Link Nic that SBC gave me (realtek chipset) and it worked great, and the connector held great.
Maybe it will break if you are the type that plugs and unplugs the cable constantly.
