what are the differences in the XPs???

    XP professional MSDN, Volume licensed
    Xp Home, Corporate, volume licensed
    XP Professional Retail
    XP Home Edition, Retail
    XP Pro OEM
    XP Home OEM

If I only use for regular stuff and gaming, which one is best. The most networking I would use is just to share a laptop and a destop on a router.

For the things you mentioned above, just get the cheepest version you can find, I doubt you will gain or lose any featurs you will use or miss by going for any specific version.

There's really only 2 underlying version, Professional and Home. The other variations are (obviously) how it's licensed, and the price. For your usage the Home edition should be fine.

You are not thinking about actually paying retail for a copy, are you? I over paid and got my copy of XP prof for $15.

You ma want to check out Gateway.com I got a student copy for 80 bucks (xp pro upgrade) and didn't have to show proof of studentship. Cool! I also got a full copy by registering my one man webdesign business with microsoft partners for 40 bucks! Deals are out there if you look without having to resort to piracy. Not that I would condemn you. Don

I got a student discount. The university has a special deal with MS. Most software are $15 at the University's book store. Office XP and Visual Studio were $15 too.

AutoCAD was $25 though. They *******!
