I am not sure it will be a swift movement into the market but I believe it will take at least a small portion. I agree I do not see a need for 4GB of RAM in my current PC's with the computing I do, but it is not far away.

I would love to have a 64bit system if it will still work with my 16 bit apps. I know the 32bit apps will work. I simply view this like(similar to) going from 486 to Pentium processors.

not convincing. dont think everyone with their 32-bit processors are gonna run out and buy 64-bit amd chips cause of that.

According to the internetnews.com piece, the 64-bit version of Windows will not support 16-bit apps.

i think only one good thing will come from this, cheaper intel cpu prices. i agree we DO NOT need more than 4gb of ram. time to slow down a little, we are going to fast. what's next 128bit?

I've only got 1 gig of RAM at this time but I know I could put 4 gigs or more to use.... cost is my limiting factor. Editing video and audio can chew up RAM quickly.... The 64bit world will provide for some great advances but I dont see it in my near future. I'm still waiting for some multi-CPU aware games....

Just use a copy of Windows 2000 Server if you need to use more than 4GB of RAM. Buy a server board, add processor, have fun

AMD 64 means cheaper 32-bit Athlons too.

It's going to be interesting, and the one thing no one can doubt is that AMD's 64-bit implementation will be more backwards compatible than Intel's.

That and it may help prove MHz doesn't matter, despite the Netburst Marchitecture.

Not just a MS show either. Apparently 64-bit Linux is ready or almost too, because AMD has been testing the Opteron on it, and the combination is fast. That's the good news. The bad news is it's really slow running on a 32-bit OS (really slow as in outrun by a P4 2.8), so it really does need to the 64-bit to be any good.
