ATI DVD Decoder
I was curious to know what that new DVD Decoder thingy you can download from the ATI driver update site, does for the ATI cards? Does it instal a DVD decoder driver, or is it a firmware, bios'ish type update or what? What does it really do, cause I always thought ATI cards had the hardware decoding. I'm going to instal it on my Built By ATI Radeon 8500 128mb (its not an LE), as soon as I get the updated ATI cd (which I think is stupid you need the cd). So basically what is the DVD decoder update and what does it do? What improvements can I expect?

The Radeon only supports hardware acceleration of certain video decoding features, such as hardware motion compensation and inverse discreet cosine transforms.
Hardware accelerated video options:
- Optimized for multiple color depths including 32 bit
- Hardware motion compensation
- Hardware run-level decode, de-zigzag, and IDCT acceleration
- Independent color controls for video overlay
- 4-tap horizontal by 4-tap vertical filtering
- 64:1 upscaling and downscaling
- Vertical filter scaling
- Multiple video windows with hardware color space conversion and filtering
- DVD sub-picture alpha blended compositing

The DVD update is a software update for the ATI DVD Player. The ATI DVD player still must decode a significant portion of the MPEG-2 video stream via software. The Radeon only accelerates the most processor intensive functions.
A true DVD hardware decoder will process the entirity of the MPEG-2 stream. ATI cards do not because of both liscencing and design issues.
Hope this helps,

Ya thanx man, that was very helpful.. But does anyone know what this driver improves upon? Or adds to the functionality?
