CD-R's - What are the differences? Silver, green, blue?

I'm just looking for a website that will explain, compare, and review the different types of CD-R disks. I've recently learned a little about the various color dyes and I'm not sure why I would need to know the various types. I record music, data, mp3's etc.

Point me to any sites explaining this?

I have used them all and I prefer blue.

The better the quality of the coating, the faster you can record them.

I base my purchases on what I feel like paying that day. Look for specials and mail in rebates.

A few months back, there was a story of a company using a new type of disk that was only readible for a short period of time after it was removed/first read.

As time ticked away, the disk slowly darkens. Until the time period expires and the disk is rendered not readible.

It was used for a movie trailor for MI2 or something of the kind.

The only difference I've noticed is that my RCA DVD player (about 4 years old) will only recognize Gigastorage ones. Any other brand/colour just won't work.

What model RCA dvd is that? I have an old Proscan (I believe to be made by RCA) I do think it is CDR incompatable but it sure would be nice if I could find one brand that it could read. Gigastorage you say I 'll have to check that out!

the only reason there are different colors is each company has to make their own way of making them - different combinations of dye colr + backing color make different disk colors, thats all

    Sorry for the late reply...

I have an RCA 5220 purchased in October of 1999. Very, very nice DVD player, with DTS, optical out (new at the time!) etc. The only problem I have with it is the limitation on which burned CD's it will play.

Good luck trying out Gigastorage... they've been very good disks so far for me.
