    Battlefield 1942

Well, I did a search on my issues with this game, but didn't find an answer/resolution to it.

Basically, I went out and bought the game, installed it, and tried to start playing it. I can play for about 10-30 seconds and then BAM, it freezes. Locks up my computer and I am forced to hit the reset button to get it working again.

I have tried EVERYTHING that I can think of (reinstalling video drivers, sound drivers, made sure board drivers were updated, no OC'ing, no background programs, etc, etc...). Other games such as MOHAA, Everquest, Warcraft 3, etc, work fine and dandy, with absolutely no issues.

Please see the BELOW, that I sent to EA Games to get assistance from them as well. Maybe we can hash this out and figure what is going on!

    Thanks,
    Ben

Locking up within (5) minutes of playing. I have tried everything that
I can find on your online technical support sites and they are not
resolving the issue. I have updated my VGA drivers, put Audio acceleration
to Basic, made sure that there are no background programs running....

I can run other games such as WC3, MOHAA, Everquest, etc, with
absolutely no issues. Please help me!

    Thanks,
    Ben

not overheating....computer is it a nice stable temp. of 40-50C all the time according to the software I have....

Also, Battelfield 1942 isn't even close to the graphic intensity that I can get in many other games, such as a full fledged spawn from warcraft 3 Turret wars, or MOHAA blazing with 32 people in one area, or even 110 people all swinging and casting spells in a massive Everquest raid...

i know, and I also mentioned Battelfield 1942 isn't even close to the graphic intensity that I can get in many other games, such as a full fledged spawn from warcraft 3 Turret wars, or MOHAA blazing with 32 people in one area, or even 110 people all swinging and casting spells in a massive Everquest raid...

About 90% of the time, the game locks up within 10 seconds of me being in the game, even if I just turned on my computer, and clicked on that program first ~ the GPU isn't even warmed up yet!

If my card was overheating, I know that it would have melted under the pressure of WC3 Turret Wars (over 1000 rendered models all moving, and yet my computer barely slows down...) or Everquest, where you have 100 people all casting particle effect spells and rendering all 100 of those people moving, hacking, and slashing ~ Again, this is done with barely a hitch!

Heating/cooling isn't the issue....There is some major bug somewhere though :/

Did you at least try Allgamer's suggestion to see if it would work?

Yes I did and it did nothing. I knew it was not an overheating problem by the many games that I can play already with 100x more intensity in graphics.

I attached my dxdiag information, maybe that will help something =)

Also, I ran into a new problem. I moved my sound driver acceleration to basic and then tried the game, it didn't work, so I had to reboot. Well, now whenever I click on the control panal, i get a popup error message telling me I need to put the sound driver acceleration back to full. It tells me where to go, I check that place, and it already shows the acceleration at full!!!

But, that freaking pop-up won't go away lol...it's annoying...

*Is very close to a reformat again *

One of my friends bought the game and he abandoned it after a few hours of playing.

He told me that the movement controls were very hard and difficult to comprehend. In the end, he told me that he rather played Medal of Honor than Battlefield 1942. He even told me that the game is similar to Global Operations. Like a clone of Counter-Strike.

There's nothing hard to understand about the controls...you have controls for flying, on foot, tanks etc. The game is fantastic if you can keep it going. Something I did recently that seems to have helped is to disable the virus scanner while I play. Give that a shot if you haven't already.

A clone of counterstrike cbh? bf1942? I don't think so. Last time I checked you can't fly a b52 bobmer or drive a submarine in counterstrike.

cbh, what the heck does your friends inability to play this game have to do with salandar's problem?? And Baby Arm is right that there isn't anything difficult with the controls.

Salandar, I've read through your post multiple times and can't see anything wrong, you've done everything that I would have.

    Has EA answered back?

I have the game also, and while i don't have your problem, nor any other lock-up situation, I consider BF1942 to be boarderline buggy. If were you, I'd turn off these Windows Services: HERE . Although it says "... removal guide...", it is NOT a removal guide. Just turns these services OFF. It helps a great deal. NEVER EVER EVER have an AntiVirus program running in the background!! How do you have your pagefile set?

Thanks x51out, i will definitely keep that link in mind and close down all that **** tonight. I believe I have windows controlling my page file with 768MB of disc space dedicated to that...I also have 512mb of DDRam, so my memory allocation should be fine..

EA replied back, wanting my DXDIAG report, so I sent that to them and I am pending further response.

Well, i finally got the game working! With a combination of all these steps, plus the case opened up with a fan blowing inside. After I followed all of EA's suggestions, I was actually able to play for about 10-15 minutes before locking up. I thought this was strange, so I tried getting the extra venilation, and whamo! the game hasn't froze once...

Below is the e-mail chain of instructions that EA support gave me, if this problem occurs for anyone else...

    ------------

First, I have looked over the system information included with your
email and it appears that you are in need of an updated driver for your
video card. Go to http://www.nvidia.com/ to download and install the
    latest Video driver.

Next, Try to lower a Hardware Sound Acceleration setting on your
computer to "basic". To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Enter the DirectX Diagnostic Tool
(goto start, then click on run, and type in dxdiag, hit the OK
    button)
    2. Select the sound tab at the top of the tool.
    3. Set the Hardware Sound Acceleration Slider to "Basic".

Next, in the Options->Sound menu of the game make sure to lower all
sound settings to their lowest possible values.

Make sure that you have closed any programs or tasks running in the
background as sometimes one of the programs can conflict with the game.
Background applications such as anti-virus programs are often the cause
    of conflicts.

Hold down the Ctrl, Atl, and Delete keys at the same time
This will bring up the "Task Manager", follow the steps bellow in
    order:

    1) Click the "Processes"
    2) Click on the User Name button to sort by user name
    3) Click on anything besides EXPLORER and TASKMGR for this User Name or
other user names. Do NOT select anything for SYSTEM, LOCAL SERVICE, or
    NETWORK SERVICE.
    4) Click on END PROCESS
    5) Repeat steps 3 and 4 until only explorer.exe and taskmgr.exe are
    open for this user profile.
    -----------------
Try completely uninstalling the game, then once that step is complete
delete the original game folder. Run Scandisk and Defrag on your
system, located in Start>Program>Accecories>System Tools from he Start menu.
Reinstall the game, after everything has been removed.
    -----------------
    Customer 03/06/2003 09:01 AM
Well, I have good news. I did everything you suggested, and I actually got to play the game for about 10-15 minutes before it froze on me again. I was quite annoyed, but thought about it, and decided to open the side of my computer case. I did that and then put a small desk fan blowing directly on the inside of the computer case....

It worked~!!!!!! So, along with your suggestions, I would definitely recommend the additional fan blowing into the case to see if there is an overheating issue. I have a heat sink, three exhaust fans, and then two other internal fans, so I thought I would be 100% immune from a heating issue, but it appears I was not.

    Thank you for your help!

    Ben

No offense, but that kinda sux having to have some rinky-dink setup like that. Try to find out why your stuff is overheating in the first place. Maybe the HSF isn't place properly. Look at this: I have a Palomino XP2000+, default voltage is 1.75v, but it runs just fine at 1.70v at stock speeds and I can game it for hours. Naturally, the temp is very low, never over 38 C.
