Is 145F too hot for a K6-2 500?
I just replaced a P233MMX with a K6-2 500 (m/b Tyan S1590).
The m/b monitor is reporting a temp of 145F.
Is that too hot?
I ordered a hsf with the chip and I lapped it and am using A.S.
The hsf is pretty light weight - I remarked hmmm when I received it.
Also, my plan was to o/c it.
Is the 500 a good candidate on my 1590?
Any experience on the jumpers to use to get to 600 maybe?
Thanks for your ideas.

That seems way to hot.

I thought so too.
The P233 (which I had @ 266) was usually in the low 90's and that I think was because I had its hsf skewed and never got around to fixing.
I'm un-certain about the voltage settings for this AMD on m/b.
Do you know if they [especially] influence temp?
The bus speed and multiplier would seem to be right as boot-up shows 500 as cpu speed.

Do you have thermal paste between cpu & heatshink.
what does the voltage say.

Paste yes - Artic Silver.
Maybe I munged if up - it's one of the things I was going to check.
The monitor presently shows all voltages within high/low bounds:
3.3v is reported as 3.55 range 3.60 - 3.00
12v " 12.18 13.20 - 10.80
5v " 4.92 5.50 - 4.50
Vcore " 2.79 3.90 - 1.20
The chip says 2.2v core and 3.3v i/o.
I'm un-clear as to what additional jumper[s] I might have to set/reset.

2.2v is correct on that chip

Well I guess I'll shudder down and double-check hsf seating and review jumpers.
I would like to take it up 600 (or there abouts) but starting out at this temp doesn't seem right.
Thanks for your thoughts - I'll post back if I can get the temp reduced.

You probably need a larger HSF. If it's a 2.2v 500, and not a K6-2+ 500, then you won't be able to reach 600. If you have a K6-2+ and are running it at 2.2v then I can see the source of your heat problems.

Alright, I found I had the core voltage jumper set wrong.
I've now go it set (according to m/b manual) for 2.2v and the m/b monitor seems to confirm that as it's now reporting a Vcore voltage of 2.19 within the range of 1.2 to 3.9.
With that set, the monitor now shows a temp of 108f (42c) - I've been an 'f' kinda person <g> for long enough that I can't relate to 'c'.
The sales invoice and the chip both pretty clearly say k6-2 (no indication of 'plus' that I recognize anyway).
Can the chip be taken anywhere?
The multipler table in the s1590 m/b manual only lists jumper settings thru 5x (might there be a 'hidden' 5.5x?).

Had the same set up. Chip ran at about 38 C had a 3dfx supacooler for Heatsink...6x multiplier is the 2x but I could never get the chip above 525. Blew it as the vcore had to hit 2.7 even fo the 525.

hmmmm
I guess for now I'll sit on it at 500 for awhile - am now at 100f (38c) overnight.
Since I came from a 233(@66) and I can already feel a slight improvement, I probably wouldn't really gain anything worthwhile if I tried to step it up such a small measure.
Thanks for all the help.
