Volcano 6 Cu and AMD XP 1700+???

Upgrading the system to a XP1700+

Wondering if the 6 Cu is the way to go.

I have a delta fan that is way to loud right now, but love to overclock.

Looking for a balance between oc and quiet to some degree.

Don't get a Volcano 6, get a Thermal Integration V77L. I have one and it works great. My load temp is 39C on my non-OCed Xp2000.

You can find it for $18 here.

If you want even higher performance, an all copper thermalright heatsink would work great. They start around $25 without a fan.

<edit> whoops, outa stock at newegg. www.thecardcooler.com has the V77L for cheap in their heatsink section. I got my V77L from them.

As Giblet said, the TI-V77L is a good heatsink. Now that it's colder here in Southern California, I get idle temps at 35C and load at 39C on my non-oc'ed XP 1600+.

Definitely appears to keep things cool. Most of the reviews I was reading on the thermaltake pushed it just under 50C.

I hear it's not bad, but it is more expensive. The noise level rates around the same as the TI-V77L. A review at frostytech.com:

If you don't mind noise, the Thermal Integration V77N would perform even better than the V77L.

Ok, scrap the Thermaltake cu6 thingy.

I see that the Vantec aeroflow and thermal integration v77L are very similar in performance, and the TI at a much cheaper price.

Any input on the Thermalright SLK-700? This seems to be in the same arena with these other two.

With the right fan, the slk-7 is a little better than the v77L. Keep in mind that the "right fan" is a bit noisier, too.

The TT 6Cu is an EXCELLENT cooler. I have this cooler on my XP2100+. Runs at 43C - idle and 48C under full load. And ......... real quiet @ only 31 dBa.

I have athlon 1700xp with a cpu fan taht come with amd. It is noisy and even in my room temp is around 65F and the CPU temp is 50C. Should i upgrade?

Hmm, I'm at 29C right now with my V77L. Once I turn folding@home on I'll get up to maybe 38C. Ambient in 26C right now.

That's at 1.8V and 144 fsb

I plan to use 1.85V with my watercooling system. 1.85V is a bit much for a heatsink/fan.
