slow browsing.

hi there..

my problem is that when i download any file or updating my AV the browsing getting very slow..it takes time to open the pages..

once i turn the downloading prog off..browsing gets better..

noting that iam using a dial up connectin..the modem is US robotics"internal"

OS is XP pro"SP1"
P4 1.5
intel D850G mobo
256 RDRAM

any ideas?..what is the latest driver for the modem?

if that's always running then it'll definitely make it slower, and you have way too little RAM, get at least 512 Mb or RAM

i'll suggest you to run
www.mozilla.org

uninstall you downloading software
since mozilla/phoenix comes with it already

and is waaaaaay faster than IE 6

your D/L software is prolly Adware or spyware and all of those Ads take time to d/l as well.

iam using download helper just to resume some downloads..

btw,do u think that the RAM to be increased up to 512 in general?

i know it would be better but do u think it is a must especially in browsing ?for me i dont think that there is a direct realtion between RAM and the speed of browsing..

meaning, your bottleneck isn't with the RAM, it's with the 56k narrowband modem.

you might be getting only about 40+ kps or so
the number windows gives you is only the start speed
the actual speed can go way down ( and back up - one in a blue moon )
i used to have a modem that in it's control panel showed the current speed and when it hit 28.8 i would redial the connection
