    What books should I read?

I've got to read two books for AP English. They have to be either from the same author or related some how, and have literary merit. My teacher doesn't like science fiction books, or else I'd read a few of those.

What books do you guys think I should read? I'd like the most interesting books that can still have literary merit. (classics probably)

What do you mean by literary merit?

Try 'Atlas Shrugged' by Ayn Rand

The Lord of the Rings. If that don't have literary merit I don't know what does.

I'd like to actually read Lord of the Rings, but my teacher doesn't want sci fi/fantasy type books.

I'll look into "Atlas Shrugged" It seems like an interesting book. I might just do Hemingway, too. I like his writing style.

The Giver, I know it's a book that could be for 6th graders, but it's **** good, it's about a world that it's black and white, only women who have a license to give birth can give brith, and the babies will be distributed among the community, and if they are twins, the smallest one will be put to sleep........ good book, if you want to know the rest, you will have to read it

    PS, it's by Lois Lowry

Closing Time still by Joseph Heller

The Good Soldier Schweik by Jaroslav Hasek if we're already on the same issue
And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers

Talking about The Giver brought back good memories of when I first read the book in High School that I actually went to Barnes and Nobles online and bought a hardcover of it

The Giver is a book for 6th graders - that's when I read it!
I'm a senior now, just in case you're wondering.

I've already read "The Client" and I don't think it meets my teacher's standards for AP English literature. A good book, though.

I tried reading Catch 22 a few years ago, but it didn't seem interesting too me. I didn't like the style. I know other people have really liked it.

I'm leaning towards Hemingway. Does anyone have favorite Hemingway books?

I liked Mariel Hemingway in Playboy. Great literature.

I never liked Papa Hemingway, a bit dry IMO. If you like outdoor literature take a look at Jack Londons' writings. Also, if you remember a movie a few years ago called 'A River Runs Through It' (My wife says" oh, the one with Brad Pitt?") was based on a biography of the lead characters life(Norman). He is an excellent writer, and the book surpasses the movie by far.

As for the Lord of the Rings, read it on your own. It is definitely a pleasure.

    Fredrick Fosyth:

The Day Of The Jackal + The Odessa File

Hamlet + Henry V ( i do actually quite like bill shakestick)

    and

    Fight Club + Survivor

...they may have no literary relevance in history, but they will in the future, as they comment so perfectly on how futile and pathetic modern "life" really is
