well... i prefer dell or ibm. not much more to say about laptops except no particular brand has failed me.

toshiba Portege, Sony GR, Compaq 1500 or 2800 if you wanted a desktop replacement.
I wouldnt recommend Dells or IBM. Some claim that they are more reliable than the rest but every manufacturer have their own weaknesses. In my opinion, IBM is not worth the high price when there are a lot of other laptops with more value.
Sony maybe proprietary in nature, but they are very well designed and truly good value for money. I wish I could say that for IBM.

I had a DELL Inspiron 3800 that lasted me 2 years till I was done school and sold it.
Faster Celeron I have ever seen... rock-solid in any OS, even XP Pro.
Nearly cried when I sold it, it was that good to me.
I'd recommend DELL any day of the week.

Dell Inspirons are pretty good. Latitudes seem kinda cheapy. Great tech support.
Toshiba is always solid, even on the low end.
HP has given me a lot of problems in the past, so I would avoid them.
Compaq is ok, but HP owns them now. Make sure to get a "quick restore" cd set. HP and Compaq are in the habit of NOT including a full windows recovery set.
Sonys are good, but overpriced.
I've only seen a couple Gateway solos, but the company itself is kinda shaky. Tech support was a big hassle for the desktops we had. They made us go through all kinds of hoops just to get a replacement nic.

Dell is the cheapest of them all. solid stable. my buddy has an inspiron for over a year. run the same as first day.

Yep. Inspirons are good machines. I got 2 here at work. The latitudes feel like toys or something. They just feel cheap.

Also, I have this very old Compaq Contura 4/25C
(Model # 2820E) . It has a 25mhz 486 in it. Word Perfect & M$ Office. Windows 3.1. A/C Adapter and battery. 3 1/2 Floppy.
I believe it has 12mb of RAM and a 200mb HD.
And it has survived a virus.
Nothing is wrong with it. It is in almost perfect condition.
So also I would say Compaq has very good laptops.
Well, not anymore since HP has taken over them.

If money is no object, get a pumped up multimedia notebook from dell or an ultra lite from dell (the Latitude c400 and similar).
Pentium 4 2.4B Ghz (Stock HSF)
512 DDR PC2100
Geforce4 Ti4200
Soyo 645D Dragon Lite
