gonna send every thread on laptop repair problems your way
good luck on finding the display (I'm always looking on the net for older parts and stuff - I'll keep my eyes open) and ebay has busted laptops that usually go pretty cheap

It is just that I have an old notebook that I like very much and I am afraid that if the graphic card dies, or the dvd-rom drive goes there is nothing I can do......I want to replace these components So that the computer will last me some years more.
compaq persario 1900 xl
500 celeron E (it is not a mobile cpu)
192mb ram (sandra says it can be upgraded to 1 gig)
4.8 gig hdd (had to replace this one)
6x dvd-rom (although in benchmarks it says 5x)
ati rage moblity 8mb vram.

I'd leave well enough alone, cost and effort to do the preventative maintenace ain't worht it - not likely the video card will go bad, DVD maybe( they ain't cheap), but wait until it happens?
