    Gremlins II

A friend has a Compaq Desk Pro PIII 600mhz about 3 years old. I recently installed a new WD 40G Hard drive and W2K Pro. All seems to work well - except: In the middle of the night, the computer automatically starts itself. Unbelievable! (It is attached to a small network). This happens every evening. Any hints??

Check Event Viewer for the log of events for the night.

My first thought is that the PC went into Hibernation. Look in Power Options.

There are two identical computers on this network, both configured identically, BIOS and all. One automatically starts up, one does not. Scarey!

First unplug it from the network when you shut down for the night. If it still restarts you know it is not from a network wakeup signal.

So that would head me towards a power fluctation problem. A power drop could fool the computer into thinking it has a start signal.

To disable the wake-on-lan feature just disconnect the extra connector from the lan card to the mobo! This would in effect, prevent it from booting up when it receives a signal from the lan! Also, disable such options from BIOS and in Windows XP!

Otherwise, you might have a poltergeist in your domicile! In which case, I suggest getting someone to exorcise the whole house! Just kidding!

I know that some TVs turn off after not getting a signal for a while.

Found that scary thing. Like it was suggested, it was a wake-on-lan setting I missed. (It didn't show up in the BIOS, however. It was in obscure (to me) area in the properties of the LAN card. All is now fine. The gremlin has been exorcised.

It would be great to see standardization in displaying the BIOS. Everything is different for no apparent reason.
