I use Norton Antivirus 2002 from Symantec at work and their 2000 at home. I like their liveupdate and you can also get their "intelligent update" manually from their website (more recent definitions). No it's not free, but a good investment.

Norton 2002 is what I normally use, but at work they use the Symantec one.

I also used to use InnoculateIT but I don't know if they still do a free version though.

Another good one used to be TBAV, but again, I'm not sure if they are still about.

you could try one of the online scanners (Try searching google for them) if you just want to check now and again.

well I'm a cheap son of a b!#ch and I use AVG 'cuz it's free - very small and simple interface, etc. and updates are a breeze (not sure if they're as timely as Norton - but they normally provide a new dat file every week, sometimes sooner)

never know until the "big one" hits, but I haven't dealt with a virus problem for nearly 6 years now - the one I got, however, was very nasty - up til 1 a.m. saving my laptop

back then I used McAfee, which was nothing but a pain in every respect so ya gots one vote for a "yes", and one for a "no"

Norton 2002 if you dont mind paying and AVG if you wanna freebie

Ive used both and the machine boots up much faster on AVG and it eats up less system ram if thats a consideration for you

I use Norton 2002 on my new Dell. For the last few weeks I been receiving 1 or 2 email a day that Norton quarantine's due to Klez virus.
I am well pleased with Norton. Norton came on my Dell for free 3 months and the full year updates were only $10.
I had thoughts of switching to AVG but can't go wrong for only $10.

My wife uses free AVG on her computer. So far she hasn't received a Klez but I wonder if it would catch it. She has used it for couple years with no problems. AVG doesn't have as many updates as Norton.

Check this for info on all AV

Personally, I prefer PC-cillin 2002 You can try the 30 day trial and see the difference in how it affects your computer.

    Harder

    It crashed mine (WinXP).

I vote for Norton for money and AVG ( www.grisoft.com ) for free. I vote for the makers of McAfee to go straight to the hot place. It's worse than PC-Cillin.

PC Cillin screwed up my network and ICS in relation to its built in firewall that kept intervening although id told it not to

...it also didnt seem... i dunno - as though it was the most competent of programs.... must just be me
