What type of RAM is best for gaming: DDR or RDRAM?
I wasn't sure which forum to ask this question in, but since it's related to gaming i'll ask it here.
I'm getting a new computer soon and want to know which is best to go with: DDR or RDRAM. My comp. will primarily be used to play the latest PC games (mostly online). However, even though most of the sources I have looked at say that RDRAM is best, I have yet to ask you guys/gals for your respectable opinions. So...which should I go with???
Thanks a million

Supposely RDRAM is better
as Intel claims to be.
but real life experience, DDR and RDRAM are just the same.

RDram is sooo dam expensive, and I don't see it sold very much anymore, stick with DDR its' not bad and itss much cheaper than RDram.

You have to have a P4 to run RDRAM

My system:
Pentium 4 2Ghz
Gigabyte GA- 8IE
512MB PC2700 DDR
Maxtor 40gig 7200rpm Hard Drive (Primary)
Maxtor 60gig 7200rpm Hard Drive (Secondary)
ATI Radeon 8500 128mb DDR
Sound Blaster Live! Value
US Robotics 56k Voice V.90
Macronix 10/100 Network Card
Pioneer 16x40x DVD Slot Load
12x8x32 LG CDRW
Thrustmaster FireStorm Dual Power Gamepad
Enmax 350w Power Supply Dual Fan
I'm using DDR, it's VERY nice. Way better than any form of SDram, I am quite impressed with DDRs' memory bandwidth...
I don't miss SDram but I still use 512mb of it in my old P2 400mhz

Thanks for all the feedback people!
I'm looking at a Pentium 4 2.4 Ghz CPU for my comp. and heard that RDRAM is supposedly better for it than DDR. However, if DDR is just as good than I'll go with that. Any comments on this???
Thanks again

Ohio State r0x0rz!
Plain and simple RDRAM is better for a Pentium 4 than DDR is.

bah screw intel (sorry if i wastn supoposed to say that word hehe) amd is jsut abouta lways gonna be better in price, oc ablility and speed, they may be "slower" by the speeds but they can haul *** in oc'n cuz im not sur if true but didnt intel put a safe guard on p3 chips and l8r so that u can only oc the fsb? thus making the speed of ram u can support more vast?
and o yes, stick with ddr heres a good analogy if it makes sense
AMD is to PENTIUM
as
DDR is to RDRAM
either way i hope u get the picture =) ty

Part of what you sais is right. AMD are better for price for perfamce wise. But they don't O/C as well as pentium 4s do. The highest over clock of a 1.2ghz thunderbird is 1.888Ghz. The highest P4 is 4ghz. Now which one is a btter over clocker AMD XP are even worse O/Cers then the thunderbirds because they are hotter and they are lock(Just like the pentium 3, you can only O/C it with the FSB)
But I think the new hammers that are coming out will smash intel

Bizkitkid2001 needs to go back to geek school. You can OC amd XPs by the multipliyer, you just need to unlock it. You have to fill the bridges and use a conductive material. It's not that hard.
What was this thread about?
Oh yeah, Rdram vs DDR
RDRAM is technically better, but the money would be better spent elsewhere. On ddr motherboards where you can run the memory at 333 and 400 mhz (ddr speeds, not actual), memory performance can surpass that of rdram, especially with aggressive memory timings. If I were you, I'd buy some high-quality ddr and a good motherboard instead of wasting money on rdram.
Or you could wait for the new dual channel ddr boards that come out in a few months. They will go far beyond the performance levels of RDRAM systems.
This is where my signature would go if I wasn't so lazy.

K... long as yur not planning on using SDram on a P4 yur gold....
I find the price is not worht the performance of RDram... DDr has a wide variety of speeds, and for the name DDR (Double Data Rate) you, have DDR running at 266mhz for an example it is effectively running at 582mhz (excuse me if my math is wrong 2x266)... Jus "food for thought" for those of you who do not know the deal with DDR

Re: Thanks for all the feedback people!
"bob" is right about that.
giving a p4 system RDRAM will definitely give it a significant boost, especially in particular applications like compressing and video playback (not to mention games).
its jus the price people are so picky about, but it still is better for ur new configuration.
