    no support.

    use a Dual Boot system

so install 98 on one partition, and XP on another.

**** man If it were my system and it were close to me I might but it is 600 miles or more away and the lady that owns it does not want to double boot she just would like a reasonable answer
so that she has a working scanner

I thought that real help might be offered

I said it was a friends machine in the first place

i'll suggest either a SCSI scanner, or a USB scanner in this case.

I once had an unsupported Umax 600p working with XP, useing a 2000\NT driver, but it took some playing with to get XP to accept the driver. It could be that your friend hasn't disabled the driver protection feature in XP.

this is done in "Control Panel\System\Hardware\Driver Signing" and check either "Warn" or "Ignore" and "Make Action The System Default".

    Hope this helps.

Lot of posts in Google groups for the 2000p. Best I could find:

Scroll about half way down to English version. Need to install the update for WindowsXP and and VistaScan 3.55
    http://www.umax.de/cgi-bin/treiber.p...S=win_XP&D_For

A number of other posters had no luck with the above, but did using the Astra 610p driver that comes with XP with the drawback that it is an minimal Twain driver that will preview and scan...can set scan
mode and resolution, but there is little else....

Quote from Umax web site: -- Windows XP supports Astra 610p with an own WIA driver. To install the WIA driver open the Windows XP controll panel "Scanners and Cameras". Select the command "Add" and as Manufacturer select "Umax Data Systems".

    Good luck.
I plan on living forever. So far, so good.
