How to overclock an AMD K6 2?

I have an old K6 2 366 and i was wondering how i could overclock it . I mean are they multiplier locked? If so how or can they be unlocked?

    Thanks in advance.

As I remember, K6-2s are not multiplier locked. The CXT core even had a 6x multiplier. I believe your 366 is running at 5.5x66. you can try 75mhz or you can set the multiplier at 2x (which is 6x for the cxt core). increasing the bus would be better overall. You might have to bump up the voltage a bit. K6-2s didn't overclock that well, but you can try.

You may have to go 100x4 to get 400. Your memory may or may not be able to get there. Usually 33mhz over stock is the limit. Good PC66 should get 100mhz and good PC100 should get 133mhz.

Your main worry should be overclocking the PCI bus, that's why the 100x4 suggestion. Take a look at your mobo manual and make sure you aren't overclocking the PCI Bus too much (it should be in there).

I haven't had a chance to try anything yet.
I have pc133 memory in it right now, so the memory should be fine. I'll reply with the results when i get a chance.

    Thanks again

btw, what kind of board do you have? if you have 100mhz bus, go for 4x100. If you don't have 100, then 75 would be the most logical step up.

i got my k6-2 350 up to 495 but nothing past that and even then i had it at 3.1 volts
it ran like that at about 65C idle and like 75 under rc5 for about a year and died
i would say you should limit your voltage to 2.7 with adequate cooling and you should get at least 450 outta that chip

The best K6s for overclocking were the "+" series. They were actually made for laptops, but some SS7 boards can run them. I've seen guys overclock 450mhz K6-2+ chips to over 600mhz. not too shabby. The voltage is super low, though (2.0-2.2v). I think there might have been a few 2.4v batches too. Much more than that and you pretty much fried it.

The mobo is a Biostar M5SIB with an SIS chipset. I think the mobo supports upto a 75mhz bus.

On the cpu it says 2.2v core.

The computer will not boot at any speed above default. I upped the voltage to 2.9 and still would not boot. I was afraid of going any higher on the voltage.
On top of that i can't get the mobo to see my harddrive. I've tried 3 different harddrives and it can't find any of them. It finds the cd rom and the fd but no hd.

Its not that big of a deal i just wanted to see how far i could push my old equipment. Oh well

If anyone can think of anything else to try i'm all for it.

    Thanks again

some devices just don't like the higher pci speed. at 75mhz, you are also overclocking the pci to 37.5mhz from 33mhz. you can try removing the other cards and see if you system will boot with just video. if not, you can try a different video card too.

do you have pc66 ram? that might be holding you back. not much more i can think of.

If overclocking is too difficult, then try upgrading in other areas. Chances are that you will get much higher attainable speeds by upgrading the memory (RAM) or video card depending on your needs.

I've got pc133 ram and onboard vga and sound. I'm not using any pci slots.
