    files have different names

my co-worker wanted me to get his pictures from a hard drive. he said it has an OS on it (win xp). i tried to boot it and it just hangs when it is verifying dmi pool.......

so i tried to make it a slave and boot it with a drive that boots, but when i open my computer, and click on the the second drive and i see files but it has symbols instead of names. i can't open any file...

    does anyone have a clue?

Its either a virus or a severely corrupted file system. Have you tried running CHKDSK /F /R on the drive in question?

Which OS did you boot with?

If he can see the files, we must assume that he assigned a letter to it.

Have you tried running CHKDSK /F /R from the Command Prompt on the drive in question?
