Any KT3 motherboard and an Athlon Xp 1900+:

You'll need new memory too. Scale back to an Athlon XP 1600-1700+ and get the memory included. Let MWave assemble and test the setup because heatsink mounting is critical here.

Any AMD K7 processor and an Epox 8KTA3+Pro. Uses PC100 or PC133 memory. Does not support DDR memory. Can get 166mhz FSB, but will only last about 10 minutes at that speed. Usually stable around 150mhz.
my 2c worth
2400+ (12x166)
8RDA Rev 1.1 (3305 BIOS)
2x256 TwinMos/Windbond PC3200
AIW 9700 Pro (Cat3.1, MMC8.0)
Audigy
SE=15,517
Game2=163.1 (HiDetail)
Game4=120.4 (Nature)
03=5060

The EPoX 8K3A+ does handle DDR.

The "best" combo depends on what you're going to use it for, and if you're going to OC etc. $150 sounds a bit low for anything current, is that for just the mobo and CPU (no memory etc.)? Do you have existing memory (DDR or regular SDRAM?) that you plan on reusing then? So many questions...

Processor - AMD Athlon XP 1700+ (1.47GHz) - $68
Motherboard - MSI MS-6380E KT3 Ultra - $77
You'll need ddr memory, which you can get 128 mb of for less than 50(probably) If you downgrade the motherboard or processor a little you could get 256 mb memory

Abit KR7A - $69
Duron 1GHz - $32
Heatsink/fan - $7
With shipping, it's roughly $115.
Add another $35 for 128MB PC2100 DDR.
