do you need a patch for win98se to load up properly on an amd atholon 1000MGh board.
the son in law formated his hdd and windows loads with errors, like ios device driver errors and some where along the line thier was some (possibly) corrupt files.
Do a scandisk on the hard drive. there may be bad sectors in there. You might also want to "zap" the drive to make sure the boot sector is not corrupted.
bill, when you say bad memory, do you mean physicaly?
their was something mentioned about low memory.
sorry I cant be more specific. I have not seen what it does or what the lad is doing to the machine. he,s kinda like a bull in a china shop. hits buttons before he reads what he,s doing.
anyway I finaly got a day off and i still havent got to getting the hard drive in the "toy" to acknowledge its a 2 gig drive. thats next on my hit list.
We will take a trip into the city tonite and have a boo at the lads machine and see what it is doing. I,m sure I will be haveing a few questions by morning, chat then. thanks. ward.
Yes...check the physical RAM by swapping out/removing sticks. MidKnyte's suggestion is valid as well. A full Scandisk with surface check is a good idea. Have him start that as you leave your place - it might just be done when you arrive.
1) Be sure that no more than 512meg is installed before installing 98.
2) Clean CD and drive.
3) Were any drives added or reconnected before 98 install was attempted? I had a floppy drive that worked fine in an HP that completely locked down my custom unit when I tried to install it there.
4) Whenever I get "cannot copy file" errors, I always have to turn off the computer and reinstall CD. If the errors are severe enough, you may be given the option to restart from the point of failed installation.
5) A degrading HDD, obviously, will also cause installation failure and errors.
hi all. well I went to the city and looked at the lads machine.
its beyond my limited knowledge. he will just have to take it back to where he got it put together. get them to get it going and make him a restore disk.
