    unwanted emails

Not sure which category this should be in but..
I am receiving some disturbing (adult) solicitation emails coming through my home and office servers. When I try to reply to them to remove my address from their list, the address is unknown.
They seem to have different return addresses each time. Some of the server extensions are...@ed.ac.uk and @advn.co.jp. They probably are fake addersses, but how are they able to send these ?
How do I find out where these messages are coming from and / or how do I block them from coming in ?
I am using Outlook 97 at the office, and Outlook Express at home.

    Thanks
    GPo

this is just spam and there isnt a whole lot you can do to get rid of it other than never using your real email address when filling out anything on the web or at the very least, have a dummy account that you use only for filling out forms so you know anything in that account is garbage. I wouldnt recommend trying to opt out of the emails you are receiving since that lets the people on the other end know they have a live email address. Just look at the header and delete it without opening it, it sucks but I feel that is just one of hte downsides of our information age...
To me, clowns aren't funny. In fact, they're kind of scary. I've
wondered where this started and I think it goes back to the time I went
to the circus, and a clown killed my dad.

At the office, we use outlook / 97. And at home I use Outlook Express, and sometimes Outlook 2000.
It's almost like someone hase searched my last name. A very uncommon last name which is within both email addresses.

Everybody hates spam, but enough of them buy into it anyway to keep it usefull. I'd hate to see the internet get regulated but sooner or later we are going to have to or we'll run out of bandwidth. I do think it should be illegal to send spam without a return address to the sender's isp. If everyone could just send it back, eventually they would give up or get booted from their service provider.

The target for direct mailing used to be 1%. If they could get a one percent respone, they'd make money. With spam, it's different. It doesn't cost them very much to generate the stuff. So they try to send out millions and millions. If they can hook 300 people at $35 a piece, they've made over $10,000.

The best you can do for spam is to channel it. Set your mail filters to deposit e-mail that has nothing in the TO: to a seperate folder. It'll take out about 75% of your spam.

Most of spam is just random generation. Nobody's combing the web looking for addresses. E-greeting cards seem to be a big source of culling. They get two active addresses each time a card is sent.

Some stupid online merchants sell their client lists. This is pretty stupid because there is so much spam, I don't read any advertisement.

It's best to keep a "spam box". That's an e-mail addy especially for commercial stuff. I have a personal box. But it gets more spam than my "spam box". That's because my children dutifully send me greeting cards to my personal box!

RayH, I think they are culling the addresses any where and any how they can. If you keep the same email address long enough you will eventually be on almost every cockroached list in the world. What? Now I got to change my address every week? Don't let your kids send you cards, don't use instant messages or chat rooms? Don't give it to anyone ever? I don't do any of the above and still get some really nasty stuff in the Inbox. I did open a new Email address several months ago, and only gave the address to my broker. I haven't got one spam on it yet, so I doubt it is randomly generated.

    spam email

I totally agree with RayH. You keep atleast 2/3 email address which are available free for general correspondence. You can channelise using ruler in outlook or outlookexpress so that emails will be filtered and diverted to related folder.

I keep 3 address for online correspondence out of them One paid which I give only for serious communications.

So far as spaming is concered blocking address is also not possible as the sender address changes each time.

    Take care in future

    Thanks

For the average personal user, Hotmail is excellent for channeling spam. Using Hotmail generates a lot of spam. But it gets channeled into a single folder.

Hotmail has an option to set the Junk (Bulk) Mail filter to EXCLUSIVE. This sends all e-mail whose return address is not in the Hotmail site address book or save list to go directly to the Junk (Bulk) folder.

It will download to Outlook Express in this manner. I have only the INBOX complete messages downloaded. All other folders just have the headers downloaded. Anyway, I just scour the Bulk folder for just in case. I usually just delete the whole contents. INBOX is definitely stuff I want.

There must be something that can be done to block this ****.
It's not nice to see 2 or 3 messages waiting for you every day or so titled " free porn all you can handle" when my 12 and 13 year olds are checking the mail too.

First Rule and most important rule -- Never respond or reply to any spam e-mail, not even if they offer you an "op-out" option - this will only open a door for them to send you more e-mail and resell your email address!

I never had much luck with "most" spam filters and you still receive the mail on your system.

    This works best for me:

First I changed my POP (Primary) mail address. I notified ONLY my friends that are in my address book.
When I forward jokes to them I send as "Bcc". I asked my friends to remove me from their forward list unless they use "Bcc".
Most people don't use Bcc and everyone's address is shown.. in time each forward has numbers of addresses that can be collected and used for spam or worse to send you a virus! A forward starts out between friends but it can wind up anywhere.

I set up a Hotmail address. I use this address as my public address, for posting on forums, any place that I need to post my address or placing orders on the internet. I set Hotmail spam filter to EXCLUSIVE, that means ALL mail not in my Hotmail address book goes to a junk folder.
With one click I can check the folder or delete the complete folder. I will check it daily if I have recently placed an internet order. Usually web site order confirmation is sent immediately after placing an order. I don't have to check but once every 7 days before the folder auto deletes.

Since doing the above almost two years ago I never get spam to my POP address.
