    Partition Magic Info Please

From reading posts on forum, I would guess that Partition Magic is a definite plus for setting up multiple partitions and operating systems on hard drive. OK, as Quark would say, "I am all ears." O"O. What can you do with the program, and is it Windows based? I have scanned the info at the website.

There is almost nothing you cannot do with Partition Magic. You can alter/change/add/remove partitions without destrying your files. Change from Fat32 to NTFS etc. etc. and set up dual boot systems. You can set up all your changes in windows and when you apply the changes it boots into DOS and the changes are made there.

If you change the partition setup on your PC so the drive letters change then Drive Mapper will alter files so your apps know which new partition to look in. An essential addition to your PC IMHO

Partition magic can certainly do alot and it is windows based but there is a program that is not Windows base, and actually doesn't require to be installed in any operating system all it needs is a FAT, FAT32 or NTFS partition. It is System Commander, it has a GUI and supporst a mouse, it even has a mini start menu, it is capable of moving partitons it even has an OS wizard which will take you through adding a new OS. Now I have used both and am happy with Partiton Magic but personally I like System Commander. http://www.v-com.com/

I second that smelanson. I've used both partition magic as well as system commander for quite some time now. Although both have their own benefits and drawbacks, I by far like System Commander best. The ability to seamlessly introduce new OS'es, resize partitions, etc is awesome. It's VERY user friendly, and the Tech Support from V-Com is grand as well (on the 1 occasion I had to use it). I have it installed on 3 of the machines I have at home, and on more than one occassion it has actually saved my backside from having to perform complete reinstallations. Gotta love the time saved there!!

    Sys COM all the way!

I even installed it on an ME machine and it makes it easy to get to the ME DOS prompt, alsoI have used it just for security, just so I can have a password on my computer. The most I ever installed as far as operating systems on my computer is DOS 6.22, Win 95, Win 98, Win NT4 Server, Win NT4 Workstation, Win 2000, and Linux all at the same time, thank got for extended partitions and the ability for an NT based and Linux OS to have the system partiton on a extended partition. I don't recomend installing this many OSs tho I just tried it to see if it could be done. What is the most OSs that you installed Rainsford1?

I currently am running XP Pro and my son just got a game that requires Win 98 or ME. Will Partition Magic or System Commander let me set up a dual boot system with XP and 98/ME without reinstalling XP?

Both will but System Commander supports being installed on an NTFS file system and both support partition resizing, personally I recommend System Commander, just remember with which ever you choose you will need to newest verison so that they will support Windows XP. I actually did what you are trying to do with both programs, they both worked just partition magic comes with boot magic which is what allows you to mulitboot and so it requires a FAT or FAT32 file system to be installed on.

Partition Magic IMHO is just about a required purchase.(And so is GoBack) No one mentioned that PM comes with an OS manager called Boot Magic. Buy it, you will not be sorry.

True, I am assuming that people are aware of that, sorry, if you are going to multiboot then you need boot magic, don't forget it. I forgot it before, but there is ways to fix that if you forgot it. Now taht is why I choose system commander over partition magic. basically if you are looking for something simple choose partition magic but if you are really hard core and need alot of work done then it is system commander all the way.

Is PM only Windows based or is there a version available for Linux also?

If Bill G. stole/purchased PM he would squash it so it wouldn't be so easy to put linux on a system too. Of course there are versions of QNX, BeOS, Athena, and even linux that'll boot off a FAT partition and not screw up Windoze.
GoBack will thoroughly screw your system up if you alter your drive config without disabling GoBack first. Been there, fixed that.
Lastly, cfdisk? I would hate to rely on a GUI tool to manage my hard drives.
