    directx 8.0

cannot uninstall directx 8.0. I need to reinstall 7.0 because apparently, after installation, I found that 8.0 doesn't work with many of our games. I almost destroyed my system (Windows ME) trying but fortunately fixed it. Need to uninstall 8.0 and reinstall 7.0. HOW? Any help from anyone??

    Officially there is no uninstall.
While searching I found this possible method:

If you go to c:\program files\directx\diag.exe (and run the program)
then click on the tab that shows the files directx uses and boot into safe mode and delete these files.

-I think you have do it from the command prompt.

Other tips I got seem to point to freeware uninstallers for up to DirectX 6 but not later.
    I searched Google for these.

Personally I'd try just installing DirectX 7 over the top of it.It may work.
The other more technical method would be to run utilities that track changes to the registry and files. Then Reinstall DirectX.Then use that tracking record to trace where to remove keys from the registry and files.
Such type utilities can be found at the likes of:
    http://www.sysinternals.com/

That's probaly how the removers are made.
It is not a method for the faint of heart or impatient however.
    Sorry, that's all I got.

--p.s. Except you might try DirectX 8.1 as last resort as 8.0 was buggy beta.

I would like to think that Direct X 8.1 is backward compatable with games. It might have changed your video driver files. I would upgrade to 8.1 and then reinstall my video drivers. Or roll them back if that is an option.
Things that make you go HMMMMMM...

just wanted to thank you all for answering. Obviously I have a number of options but I think I'll try uninstalling first. Deleting files somehow always gets me into trouble. Thanks again! Wish me luck!!
