What is an OEM version of XP?

While browsing techstore.com for a P3 850 CPU and I noticed that I could also order a copy of XP Pro for $135 with the CPU. It said it's a full OEM version. What does that mean?

    oem software

You will generally find that oem (original equipment manufacture)software is only available at the price stated when you buy a computer from the company which does not have an OS installed on it.

With some sites you just have to buy another piece of hardware or software at regular price in order to get the OEM version at reduced cost.

Not really to the above posts. I put together a system for a friend. I went to a store here in SF and bought an OEM version for $155. I didn't have to buy anything else. The thing I notice about OEM is that they are "parts" usually with a system. Meaning they might get in three or four pre-built systems and strip them for the parts...which they sell as OEM.

The biggest difference between OEM Windows and Retail is that Microsoft provides Zero support for the OEM product. It assumes that you bought it from a builder and the builder must support it.

All of the above posts are true. All you need to do to qualify for an OEM version of Windows is to buy a fan.

    does dsp = oem ?

I also see a lot of sites selling windows xp with "DSP" in the item description. Is that the same as OEM? What's it stand for? Don't tell me Digital Signal Processing.

You also usually do not get any operating manual with OEM, which is OK because I almost always forget that I have one anyway. Someone must be babysitting while on the board; who put the crayons to the smiley faces?
